If you are running a store on Shopee or Lazada right now, you already know the math is not “mathing”, for a lack of proper word. Commission cuts, payment processing fees, logistics fees, and ad placements you are practically forced to pay for just to stay visible on your own product listings all eat into your margin the longer you stay. At some point every serious seller asks the same question: “what would it take to own my own storefront instead of renting shelf space“?

For a lot of people, the honest answer used to be “more money and more technical headache than I want to deal with.” This review is about testing whether that excuse still holds up, using Hostinger’s Unlimited Web Hosting plan as the test case, run against a real, live, mid-sized ecommerce store for several weeks straight.

Who Am I?

I have spent years working hands-on across web infrastructure, WordPress and WooCommerce development, AI automation, analytics, and branding. I run the technical side of Pokde.Net, including our own AI-driven pipeline, and I manage multiple dedicated servers running a host of different environments including OpenLiteSpeed for our sites and clients. Alongside that, I run and maintain my own ecommerce store, which is the site used for this review.

I mention this because a review like this is only as good as the person running it. I am not approaching Hostinger as a casual blogger clicking through a dashboard for the first time. I migrate sites, manage servers, write and deploy code, run SSH and git workflows daily, and troubleshoot production issues as DevOps for a living. When I tell you a migration was clean or a feature is genuinely useful, that is coming from someone who has broken enough servers over the years to know what “clean” actually looks like. To keep things fair, I have not disclosed any affiliate links to Hostinger or any paid placements in this review, so any links that you see are commissions-free.

What I Actually Tested

I migrated a real, currently operating mid-sized ecommerce store, a WooCommerce site with a heavy plugin stack, real customers, and real order volume, onto this plan. I am intentionally not naming the store or what it sells here, since I run it myself and do not want this review to read as an ad for that business. What matters for this review is that it is not a fresh test install. It is a live site with all the mess real stores accumulate over time.

One disclosure to flag before the review itself: this is a hands-on, functional review of how the panel works, how migration went, how support performed, and what is included versus what is not. It is not a synthetic benchmark review. I did not run GTmetrix or PageSpeed numbers here, and that is a deliberate choice, not an oversight and I’ll explain it below.

I personally do not put much stock in raw benchmark scores, especially on ecommerce sites. I care about intuitive UI and UX far more. If chasing a perfect speed score were my goal, I could strip a site down to a barebones, ugly wireframe and get a great number out of it. That number would tell you nothing about whether a shopper actually enjoys using the store. Building in proper UI and UX principles, the kind that make a shopping experience feel good to use, will cost you a few points on a synthetic benchmark. A difference of 1ms or 3ms in a lab test makes little to no difference to how a real customer experiences your site. What actually matters is whether the overall experience feels fast, clear, and easy to buy from. That is what I tested for here, not a scoreboard number. And if you think benchmark scores were conclusive, this ecommerce site I migrated ranks fairly well in its niche and its not in the hall of fame of synthetic benchmarks. If you understand the underlying mechanisms of eCommerce, SEO, structure scaffolding, behavioral patterns, integrations, automations, sessions retention, caching and optimizations, synthetic benchmarks would rank very low on your priority list too.

The Money Question

Before anything else, because I think reviews that lead with features and bury pricing at the bottom are being dishonest by omission, here is the actual cost structure.

The advertised rate is RM10.99/month. That price only applies if you commit to a 48-month term paid upfront, which comes out to RM527.52 in one payment. Once that term ends, it renews at RM27.99/month. That is not a hidden fee or a gotcha buried in fine print. It is stated on Hostinger’s own pricing page. But it is also not the number that gets top billing, and it should be, since it is more than 4x the headline price.

I will say that even at RM27.99/month, this is still meaningfully cheaper than what most people assume “having your own store” costs. That is the actual number worth taking from this section, not the headline RM10.99. Keep in mind, you may need to factor in a little more cost for the domain as Hostinger will only offer it for 1 year and that only includes certain TLDs. Domain’s aren’t expensive and I would say, standby about RM50 – RM100 a year just for that which is essentially the price of your brand name.

The Good

Ease of use

The panel itself is genuinely beginner-friendly. No expensive WHM/cPanel licenses, no self-managed server nonsense, no digging through unfamiliar menus. Everything is laid out in a way that is easy to find, even for someone who has never managed a server before. The menu items are very well organized into respective silos and are extremely easy to reach. I want to say that Hostinger’s hPanel is one of my Top 10 UIs compared against most of the hosts that I have been on – dedicated server, VPS, shared or cloud, all combined!

Migration

This is where I will say something I do not say often: it was clean. I have handled hundreds of website migrations over the years, across dozens of hosts, and there is always something. A broken permalink structure, a missing PHP extension, a cron job that quietly stops firing, a plugin that throws a fatal error because of a version mismatch on the new server. Always. Every single time, something needs fixing after the fact.

Not this time especially it being a WordPress/WooCommerce website which is somewhat Hostinger’s specialty. Upon using the automated migration tool, I pointed my DNS at Cloudflare to the new server and the site was live immediately, with zero downtime. No post-migration firefighting. If the migration tool flags an issue, it tells you plainly within the sandbox rather than letting you discover it later. For a store owner who is not comfortable digging through error logs, this matters more than almost anything else. A botched migration can mean lost orders, broken checkout, or a store that is simply down while customers are trying to buy from you.

Staging done right

This one was my favorite. One click spins up a full staging copy of your site. Work on it, test whatever you need to test, then “Publish” to push those changes live. You can spin up multiple staging environments if you need to, storage permitting. This is one of the best implementations of staging I have used on any host, self-managed or otherwise. It handles the URL rewrites on its own so you don’t need to take the extra step post-staging setup.

Backups

Daily automatic backups are included and do not eat into your storage quota, which is genuinely generous. I take my backups very seriously. So serious, that one of the previous host that had “premium managed services” managed to mess up my backup restoration procedure and accidentally deleted my backup making it the one and only reason to leave the said host despite hosting with them for almost a decade. If you’re running your own dedicated box, backups can cause so much anxiety because in a wrong configuration, you might be making backups that end up non-restorable. On Hostinger, you have a choice of restoring either the files only, the backups only, or a both as a full restoration. It does have one caveat though, that I will explain in The Bad section as it belongs there.

Developer-facing tools on shared hosting

Full SSH access is included, and you can add your own SSH key. No root access, which is expected on shared hosting, but the fact that it is here at all, on a shared plan, is awesome. I am running Claude Code against this server over SSH for development work, and this alone is worth calling out as a standout feature for anyone technical enough to use it. Beyond SSH, you also get Git integration for deploying straight from GitHub, WP-CLI, PHP version and extension management through simple checkboxes, remote MySQL access if you need to connect from another machine, a clean cron jobs interface, a DNS zone editor if you are using Hostinger’s nameservers, directory password-protection, an IP allow and block list, and hotlink protection with a solid, if fixed, list of file types. None of these are flashy, but they are the kind of unglamorous features that decide whether you can actually run a business on a platform without needing a developer on retainer.

Support

Kodee, the AI support agent, handles a surprising amount on its own, including configuration tasks and not just FAQ answers. The clearest example from my own testing: I had an SSL installation issue, and even with my level of experience I overlooked that the site was still sitting behind Cloudflare’s proxy. Kodee caught it, told me to temporarily disable the proxy during SSL installation, and the install went through cleanly the moment I did. Every interaction I have had with Kodee has resolved correctly on the first attempt, with no loops and no needing to escalate to a human because the AI got stuck.

When you do need a human, asking for one explicitly gets you one, and it is not a queue with no guarantee. Requesting a human starts a timer, and you are guaranteed a human response within 10 minutes. I tested this once specifically to confirm it was not just routing back to another AI response with a different name attached. It was a real person albeit a “summary response” rather than a real “live chat”. More on this later as I do have some caveats here too.

Value adds included at no extra cost

LiteSpeed Enterprise is included, not OpenLiteSpeed. This is a genuinely meaningful upgrade for WordPress and WooCommerce performance, and it comes with QUIC.cloud credits if you use it. I run Cloudflare in front of my sites and use LiteSpeed Cache without QUIC, so I cannot speak to that integration specifically, but the underlying LiteSpeed Enterprise stack itself is a real win over the OLS setups a lot of budget hosts run. A free CDN is included as well which once again, I did not rely on it since I run Cloudflare, but for someone starting out without a CDN budget, having one included by default removes another cost barrier to going independent. Automatic malware and vulnerability scanning also runs in the background. For a first-time store owner, the fear of getting hacked is real and often paralyzing, and this gives a baseline of protection without requiring you to know anything about server security.

Performance Boost for Emergency Moments

There comes a day (and I always hope for every ecommerce retailer) that your site gets sudden spike of traffic. It could be a successful ad campaign, a sale post going viral, payday march, or anything that makes some of the best moments for any ecommerce store. All of a sudden, your site starts running low on resources and you wish you had that extra push to pull through the day. Hostinger gives you one time performance boost for 24 hours, every 30 days. Its a one click button and has zero additional cost. You get double and more temporary resource boost for 24 hours that includes CPU, RAM, I/O, IOPS, PHP workers and Max Processes bump. Keep it for those days and use it as it doesn’t get carried forward if you don’t.

The Bad

Backup cadence

The daily automatic backups are great, and you also have an option to make a manual backup. However, you are only allowed one manual backup every 24 hours, with no option to overwrite it and reset the timer. If you are mid-way through major changes and want a second safety checkpoint within that window, you cannot take one. A “single manual backup” model that overwrites the previous one instead of forcing a wait would fix this without any real downside so this seems like a downer especially if its called “Unlimited Plan”.

Database naming

When you spin up a production site and a staging copy, both databases get assigned auto-generated names. You can then “assign” them to the site that they belong. However, neither is labeled by subdomain. I currently have two databases, both effectively named as the main domain with no clear distinction as to which is prod and which is staging beyond guesswork. On a store with real customer and order data, running the wrong operation against the wrong database is not a cosmetic problem. It can cost you actual data. This needs fixing on Hostinger’s end, and until it is, treat it as something to double and triple check every time you touch a database on this platform.

Priority support, an unresolved contradiction

Hostinger’s public pricing and plan pages list “Priority 24/7 expert support” as included on this exact plan. My own account dashboard, when I check plan features directly, shows it as not included. I cannot reconcile these two sources, and I am not going to guess which one is right. I am stating both facts as I found them. What I can say from direct experience is that the practical support I received, Kodee’s accuracy plus the 10-minute human-response guarantee, was solid regardless of what the “priority” label technically means or does not mean on paper. If the label matters to your buying decision, verify it against your own account before you buy, not against the marketing page. Plus, the “human interaction” was merely a summary response and not really a “Live Chat” with the said human. When u ask for a human, your responses start turning yellow signifying the message will be delivered to a human for evaluation instead of Kodee. This is not the first time I’m on Hostinger and just a year ago, I could actually interact with real humans on this very same plan, so Hostinger has downplayed the Live Support a bit.

No Redis, memcached only

I am a HUGE fan of Redis cache. It’s probably the best thing since bread and butter. If your stack relies on Redis for object caching or session handling, you will not get it on this tier. You would need to move up to Hostinger’s VPS plans for that. To me, this one is a real bummer. To think that Hostinger has made enabling object caching such a simple feat but its underlying mechanics are memcached instead of Redis feels very anticlimactic. If you are the kind of store owner who cares about caching architecture, know that going in. No hard feelings to memcached fanbois, but sorry to say, Redis ftw.

No dedicated IP on this plan

You get a shared IP unless you move up to the Cloud Startup tier. In practice, SNI-based SSL means a shared IP can still carry its own valid SSL certificate without issue, so the historical reasons for needing a dedicated IP mostly do not apply anymore. Still worth knowing if you have a specific reason to need one, since certain compliance or legacy-integration requirements sometimes do. You may not want to run a mailserver on this for this very reason because your IP might be penalized for someone else’s doing rendering all your DMARC compliances down the drain.

Shared resource ceilings

This plan is capped at 60 PHP workers and 75 max MySQL connections, on 2 virtual CPU cores and 3GB RAM, regardless of how many websites you stack onto the “unlimited websites” allowance. “Unlimited” refers to site count and storage-adjacent limits, not to server resources. Every additional site you add draws from the same fixed pool. A single lean store will likely never notice this. A store running concurrent checkout traffic at real scale, or someone hosting several active sites on one account, will hit this ceiling before “unlimited” starts to feel accurate. For the best or worst, “unlimited” doesn’t really stick well on this plan name at least for me.

Verdict

Coming back to the question I opened with: is the “it’s too expensive and too complicated” excuse still valid for someone thinking about leaving Shopee or Lazada for their own store? After several weeks of running a real, heavily-plugged-in ecommerce site on this plan, my honest answer is no, not anymore, at least not for the reasons people usually give.

The technical barrier that used to justify staying on a marketplace is largely gone here. Migration was cleaner than anything I’ve seen across hundreds of past migrations. Staging, backups, SSL, and day-to-day management are all simple enough that someone without a DevOps background could genuinely run their own store without needing to hire one. Support backed that up rather than undermining it: Kodee got things right every time I tested it, including a fix I would have expected to need a human for, and the 10-minute human guarantee held up when I checked it directly.

None of that means this plan is flawless, and I’d rather explain where the rough edges are than find them yourself after you’ve committed. The database naming situation is a real risk you need to manage yourself, not a footnote and I really hope Hostinger improves this. The manual backup cadence is a genuine annoyance if you’re mid-way through changes. And if your ambitions outgrow a single shared-resource pool, whether that’s needing Redis, a dedicated IP, or more than 60 PHP workers’ worth of concurrent traffic, this plan has a ceiling you will eventually hit.

For a mid-sized store, or someone starting out and trying to build one, none of those ceilings are the thing standing between you and owning your own storefront right now. The thing standing between you and that is usually just the decision to start. This plan removes the cost and complexity excuse. What you do with that is up to you.

If you’re comfortable working around the caveats above (and none of them require more than the awareness I’ve given you here), this is a legitimate, well-built option to build a real ecommerce business on, without needing anyone else’s permission or fee structure to sell your own product.
