Unboxing the SJCAM C400

The SJCAM C400 standard combo arrives with a generous accessories haul that gives you everything needed to get shooting straight out of the box. Inside you get the camera itself, the remote camera handle, a waterproof case, a frame mount, a base back clip, a back clip, a lanyard, an adapter, a base mount, two curved and flat mounts, a screw, two 3M adhesive stickers, a USB cable, and a wipe cloth. For a budget action camera, the accessory spread is commendable and covers most common mounting scenarios without requiring immediate additional purchases.

The packaging is functional rather than premium, but for a camera at this price point that is entirely appropriate. Everything is neatly organised and accounted for, and the inclusion of the waterproof case in the standard combo is a practical addition given that the camera itself lacks built-in waterproofing.

Walkaround

SJCAM C400 Review — Compact and Affordable, With Some Caveats - 25
SJCAM C400 Review — Compact and Affordable, With Some Caveats

The SJCAM C400 is genuinely small. At 68 x 32 x 25.5mm and 54 grams without the handle, it sits comfortably in the palm of your hand and disappears into a pocket without any effort. It is compact enough to wear on a pendant around your neck or fix to a hat for POV filming without the weight or bulk becoming an issue, which is exactly the use case it is designed for.

The camera unit itself is clean and minimalist in design. A small 1.3-inch touchscreen on the front handles navigation and framing, a single button manages power and shutter duties, and a microSD card slot and USB-C port handle storage and charging. The touchscreen is one of the SJCAM C400’s genuine advantages over similarly sized rivals, many of which omit a screen entirely, and having it built in makes setup and framing significantly more convenient.

Two missed opportunities on the hardware side are worth noting immediately. The SJCAM C400 has no built-in magnet for attaching to metal surfaces, which is a feature that increasingly common on compact action cameras and genuinely useful for creative mounting scenarios. More significantly, there is no built-in waterproofing. For an action camera at any price, the absence of native water resistance is a meaningful limitation, even if the included waterproof case addresses it to a degree.

The handle accessory is where the SJCAM C400’s character changes most dramatically. Slotted into the handle, it transforms from a tiny wearable camera into a handheld vlogging setup that bears a surface resemblance to a DJI Pocket-style device. The handle is comfortable to hold, features a 2.29-inch rotatable touchscreen that works for both horizontal and vertical content, incorporates its own 3,000mAh battery for extended recording, and doubles as a wireless remote control for the camera with a range of around 30 feet. The combined unit weighs 189g and measures 143.5 x 38.5 x 38.5 mm, which remains compact enough for travel and run-and-gun shooting.

Build quality across both components is acceptable for the price, though the materials feel firmly budget-tier in hand. Nothing feels like it would survive rough treatment, which makes the included waterproof case and frame mount more important accessories than they might initially appear.

The Good

Impressively Compact and Lightweight

SJCAM C400 Review — Compact and Affordable, With Some Caveats - 29
SJCAM C400 Review — Compact and Affordable, With Some Caveats

At 54g and smaller than most smartphones, the SJCAM C400 camera unit is genuinely easy to take anywhere and attach to almost anything. For POV filming from a pendant, hat, or chest mount, the size and weight are well suited to extended wear without discomfort. It is not the absolute smallest action camera available, but it is compact enough to feel meaningfully different from bulkier action cameras in everyday use.

Built-in Touchscreen Is a Genuine Advantage

The 1.3-inch touchscreen on the camera unit is a feature that many similarly sized and even more expensive compact action cameras do not include. Being able to frame shots, navigate settings, and review footage directly on the camera without relying on a companion app is a meaningful convenience, particularly when shooting quickly in the field. The larger 2.29-inch rotatable screen on the handle further extends this advantage when shooting handheld content.

Outstanding Battery Life, Especially With the Handle

Battery life is the SJCAM C400’s strongest practical selling point. The camera alone managed approximately 190 minutes of continuous 4K recording in testing, which is already respectable. With the handle’s additional 3,000mAh battery, total recording time extended to approximately 495 minutes, which is over eight hours of continuous 4K footage. For travel creators, event coverage, or any scenario where charging opportunities are limited, this endurance is a genuine differentiator.

The Handle Transforms the Experience

The remote camera handle is more than an accessory, it is effectively a second product. The rotatable screen, comfortable grip, supplementary battery, and wireless remote functionality combine to make the SJCAM C400 a credible handheld vlogging setup that covers both horizontal and vertical content without swapping anything around. For the price of the standard combo, getting this level of versatility is commendable.

Companion App Works Well Once Connected

The SJCAM companion app allows for wireless remote control, live preview, and direct photo and video download from the camera to a smartphone. Initial pairing requires some patience, but once the connection is established, reconnecting via QR code scan is quick and convenient. For solo creators who need to check framing or trigger the shutter remotely, the app adds meaningful utility.

Generous Accessories in the Box

The standard combo’s accessory bundle covers most common mounting scenarios without requiring additional purchases at the point of entry. Curved and flat mounts, adhesive stickers, a frame mount, clips, a lanyard, and a waterproof case together represent a practical starting kit that would cost meaningfully more if purchased separately from other action camera brands.

The Bad

Image Quality Is the Camera’s Fundamental Weakness

For an action camera, image quality is the most important performance metric, and the SJCAM C400 struggles here in a way that is difficult to overlook at any price. Even in good outdoor lighting with the highest quality settings enabled, footage exhibits an unusual combination of over-sharpening and under-detail, accompanied by prominent muddy digital artifacts that are immediately noticeable. Low light performance is unsurprisingly worse. Take any well-known brand’s action camera from 2 years ago, be it a GoPro, Insta360, or even DJI, and the gap is immediately apparent. The C400’s image output is the primary reason to look elsewhere if visual quality matters to you.

Audio Is Inadequate for Outdoor or Vlogging Use

The built-in microphone handles calm indoor conditions acceptably, but struggles significantly with wind noise outdoors, which is precisely the environment action cameras are most commonly used in. In our sample footage, the outdoor footage is on the more ideal side with minimal wind but you can hear that it captures more of the environment than necessary, like the sound of birds. More critically, there is no external microphone support whatsoever, meaning there is no hardware solution to this problem. Vloggers who need clean audio will have to record it separately and sync in post-production, which undermines the simplicity and convenience that a camera at this price point should be delivering.

No Built-in Waterproofing

For an action camera, the absence of native waterproofing is a meaningful omission. The included waterproof case provides up to 30 metres of protection, but it adds bulk, limits access to controls, and is one more thing to remember to attach before any water-adjacent activity. Cameras in comparable and even lower price brackets from other brands include native water resistance as a baseline feature, and the SJCAM C400’s lack of it feels like a genuine gap rather than an acceptable compromise.

No Built-in Magnet

SJCAM C400 Review — Compact and Affordable, With Some Caveats - 51
SJCAM C400 Review — Compact and Affordable, With Some Caveats

Magnetic mounting has become an increasingly standard and genuinely useful feature on compact action cameras, allowing quick attachment to metal surfaces, vehicles, and compatible accessories without additional hardware. Its absence on the SJCAM C400 limits mounting versatility in ways that feel avoidable, particularly given the camera’s positioning as a versatile everyday action camera.

Electronic Stabilisation Has Visible Limitations

The six-axis gyro stabilisation works in the sense that it reduces obvious camera shake, but it does so in a way that draws attention to itself, with an artificial, processed quality to stabilised footage that is noticeable on closer inspection. Enabling horizon levelling compounds the issue by reducing resolution significantly, creating a trade-off between a level horizon and usable image quality that should not need to exist at this level of technology.

This Is Not a DJI Pocket Alternative

SJCAM C400 Review — Compact and Affordable, With Some Caveats - 53
SJCAM C400 Review — Compact and Affordable, With Some Caveats

The SJCAM C400 with its handle looks similar in form to a DJI Pocket-style camera, and it is tempting to position it as a budget alternative to that category. It is not. The DJI Pocket series uses a physical gimbal for stabilisation, which produces fundamentally smoother and more natural footage than any electronic stabilisation system. The C400’s electronic-only stabilisation places it in a different performance category entirely, and buyers should understand that distinction clearly before purchasing.

Make Sure You Have a Card Reader Ready

SJCAM C400 Review — Compact and Affordable, With Some Caveats - 55

One major pain point with the SJCAM C400 is that USB transfer doesn’t work well. If you’re transferring small bits of footage or photos, you’ll be fine but I’ve found that anything larger than 2GBs worth will inevitably lead to the camera freezing up and you’ll be stuck with the “swipe up to unlock screen”. The best way to transfer data over would be via a USB card reader, which is inexpensive these days but can be inconvenient for those who prefer to have less accessories. Hopefully this gets addressed in a future firmware update.

SJCAM C400 Verdict

SJCAM C400 Review — Compact and Affordable, With Some Caveats - 35
SJCAM C400 Review — Compact and Affordable, With Some Caveats

The SJCAM C400 is a camera that does several things genuinely well. The compact form factor, the built-in touchscreen, the exceptional battery life with the handle, and the generous accessory bundle all represent real value at a price between RM630 and RM1,030 depending on the bundle. For someone who needs a lightweight wearable camera on an extremely tight budget and is not particularly concerned with image quality, the C400 covers the basics.

But image quality is not a secondary consideration for an action camera, it is the primary one, and the C400’s footage is disappointing in a way that affects every use case. Combined with the audio limitations, the absence of external microphone support, no built-in waterproofing, and no magnet, the C400 asks you to accept too many fundamental compromises even at its budget price point. Cameras from more established action camera brands at a modest premium address most of these issues comprehensively, and the difference in output quality is immediately apparent.

If you’re in a situation where you need a camera that can shoot in versatile positions but aren’t willing to splurge, it’s good to have but if you need crisp footage, this is gonna be a hard pass. As such, we award the SJCAM C400 with our Bronze Pokdeward.
