Apple HomePod 2nd Gen & HomePod mini Arrives In Malaysia Starting May 10

Apple today is announcing its smart speakers, consisting of HomePod (2nd generation) and HomePod mini, will be available nationwide starting May 10 this year. Technically, these products are far from new – the HomePod mini was, in fact, launched in October 2020, while the 2nd generation HomePod was launched in January last year. Better late than never, I guess!

Like any Apple product, you can expect tight device integration with these speakers. Notably, it comes built-in with Siri voice assistant which can be triggered by saying “Hey Siri” or just plain “Siri,” and the chipsets – Apple S7 for HomePod and Apple S5 for HomePod mini – take care of acoustics tuning to optimize the sound.

In terms of size and weight, the HomePod measures 168mm tall, and 142mm wide, weighing a relatively hefty 2.3kg per unit (you can pair both of them to function as a stereo setup as well). The smaller HomePod mini, at 84.3mm tall and 97.9mm wide, is significantly lighter, at 345g. Both offer several color options to choose from (with the mini being more colorful), and it’ll come with a color-matching power cable so it doesn’t fiddle with the speaker’s aesthetics.

Apple says both speakers support the Matter IoT standard, which means you can control all Matter devices with the HomePods functioning as a hub for various controls, even when the user is away from home.

For pricing, the Apple HomePod (2nd generation) costs RM1,549, whereas the HomePod mini is priced at RM529. Both will be available starting May 10 in Apple online stores, the Apple Store app, and physical retailers nationwide. Users with no prior subscription to Apple Music streaming service can get six months of subscription for free with the purchase of any Homemodeldels.
