Updated @ 13:57 26/8: Apple has confirmed the local pricing of Mac mini with M6 starts at RM3,799 (RM3,399 for Education), and Mac mini with M5 Pro starts at RM7,499 (RM7,099 for Education). Original article follows.
Apple has introduced a new Mac mini powered by the latest M6 and M5 Pro chips, delivering significant performance improvements across AI, graphics, and system responsiveness. The updated model is designed for users who rely on fast, efficient desktop computing for everyday tasks, creative work, and on-device AI workflows. Both configurations are built into the compact Mac mini form factor.
Mac mini with M6 Delivers High-Performance Computing in a Compact Form Factor
The new Mac mini with M6 features a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, both with two additional cores compared to the prior generation (M4). It includes a Dual 16-core Neural Engine and Neural Accelerators in each GPU core. This setup enables up to 4x faster AI performance and 2x faster graphics compared to Mac mini with M4. Unified memory is available up to 32GB, with memory bandwidth reaching 170GB/s.
The M6-powered Mac mini shows up to 13.5x faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio versus Mac mini with M1, and up to 4.8x faster than M4. Spreadsheet calculations in Microsoft Excel are up to 1.5x faster than on M4. Gaming performance in Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition with ray tracing is up to 2x faster than on M4.
Mac mini with M5 Pro Delivers Pro-Level Performance in a Compact Design
The Mac mini with M5 Pro is aimed at professionals handling intensive workloads such as video rendering, 3D design, game development, and large-scale AI inference. It features up to an 18-core CPU and up to a 20-core GPU with enhanced shader cores and third-generation ray tracing. The GPU includes Neural Accelerators in every core, supporting advanced AI tasks like image upscaling and diffusion model execution.
The M5 Pro model supports up to 64GB of unified memory and delivers 307GB/s (almost twice compared to the M6) of memory bandwidth. This allows for efficient handling of large local AI models, complex 3D scenes, and high-resolution video editing. Performance gains include up to 8.5x faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio compared to Mac mini with M2 Pro, and up to 4.5x faster rendering in Blender.
Image processing in Affinity is up to 1.5x faster than on Mac mini with M4 Pro. The chip’s energy efficiency supports sustained performance under load, making it suitable for always-on operation as a desktop for AI agents or background workflows.
Enhanced Connectivity and macOS 27 Integration
The new Mac mini includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for faster wireless connectivity. Wired performance is improved with 2.5Gb Ethernet, and a 10Gb upgrade option is available. Front-facing ports include two USB-C ports (supporting USB 3) and a headphone jack with high-impedance support.
Back panel features three Thunderbolt 4 ports on the M6 model and three Thunderbolt 5 ports on the M5 Pro model. Thunderbolt 5 enables clustering of multiple Mac mini units for distributed AI processing. USB-C also supports genlock functionality for synchronized video and camera workflows, including compatibility with iPhone 17 Pro.
macOS 27, the upcoming operating system, includes system-wide refinements. AirDrop transfers are faster, network file browsing is more responsive, and Safari start page content loads quicker. Spotlight has a rebuilt search foundation, improving indexing and search accuracy across apps. Liquid Glass UI updates include edge-to-edge sidebars, improved toolbars, and more detailed app icons.
Availability Details
Pre-orders for both Mac mini models begins today (August 25, 2026). The Mac mini with M6 starts at $899 USD and $799 USD for education. The Mac mini with M5 Pro starts at $1,699 USD and $1,599 USD for education. Units will be available for delivery starting September 22, 2026. Malaysian local pricing will be announced later, watch this space.
macOS 27 is available in public beta via beta.apple.com. The software update will be released as a free upgrade this fall. AppleCare and AppleCare+ are also available for extended support, including coverage for accidental damage and battery replacement.
