AMD AM5 CPUs: 170W TDP and 230W PPT

AMD Highlights Gaming, Commercial, and Mainstream PC Technologies at COMPUTEX 2022

Previously when the AMD Ryzen 7000 Series CPU was revealed, there was a mistake regarding the Socket AM5 and its Package Power Tracking (PPT) limit. Now, the company has rectified their mistakes by listing the correct details. As it turns out, it will have a 170W TDP and 230W PPT, instead of the previously mentioned 170W PPT limit.

AMD would like to issue a correction to the socket power and TDP limits of the upcoming AMD Socket AM5. AMD Socket AM5 supports up to a 170W TDP with a PPT up to 230W. TDP*1.35 is the standard calculation for TDP v. PPT for AMD sockets in the “Zen” era, and the new 170W TDP group is no exception (170*1.35=229.5).

While the Ryzen 7000 Series CPU was never mentioned outright, it’s pretty easy to understand which AMD AM5 CPU they were referring to. Just as it was known before, the top-tier SKUs running on the new Zen4-based will be running at 170W.

At this level, you could expect some high powered CPUs with 12 to 16 cores, as the current Zen3-based CPUs with 12 to 16 cores only have a 105W TDP. With a 65W TDP difference, you can expect higher frequencies and potentially much better performance.
