AMD Hit Record High Market Share In x86-Based Desktop & Server CPUs
Do you remember when AMD was on the very brink of bankruptcy as the chipmaker had practically lost every ground on the CPU market? That was before Ryzen was introduced in 2017, when the infamous FX-series processors had lost the company nearly the entirety of the x86-based CPU market, with the GPU division barely keeping the company alive in the trying times.
Under Lisa Su’s leadership, AMD launched the Zen architecture, which has made a comeback that was once thought unimaginable. Even today, the company is still flourishing thanks to the massive success of its multi-chiplet design: per Mercury Research (via Anandtech), as of Q1 2024, Team Red has enjoyed a record-breaking x86 CPU market share in the desktop and server segment directly at the expense of Intel – the other half of today’s x86 processor duopoly.
The latest figures published by the firm reveal that AMD currently owns 23.9% of desktop and 23.6% of server market share in the latest quarter, thanks to the recent introduction of Ryzen 8000 desktop and Zen4-based EPYC (Genoa, Bergamo, and Siena) processors. The former is the highest achieved in over a decade, while the latter represents yet another year of strong gains since 2016 when the company was almost non-existent in this segment with less than 1% of the share, as Team Blue completely dominated the server market.
Meanwhile, mobile and client segments see less growth for Team Red – the former of which scored a minor loss for the chipmaker as Intel recently introduced the all-new Meteor Lake processors that outperformed the Ryzen 8040 series processors, which was a simple refresh of earlier designs. AMD’s mobile market share still has some ways to go before it regains the highest point in recent years set in Q2 2022, at 24.8%.
