It’s been a while since we have heard any substantial leaks on AMD’s upcoming “Strix Halo” APU – but recently leaker Golden Pig Upgrade has once again brought the information to the public. According to the leaker, the new lineup will have the official name of “Ryzen AI Max”, with the top chip dubbed “Ryzen AI Max+ 395”.
Ryzen AI Max
I wouldn’t blame you if the first thing you thought about when hearing this name is to look at Apple’s chip naming, and conveniently they have the top M3 chip called M3 Max. (AMD is notorious for “copying” naming schemes from other brands in the past, so it’s not a big surprise.) In any case, the leaker lists three upcoming models of the Ryzen AI Max lineup, and they are:
The most powerful SKU is the Ryzen AI Max+ 395, which is reportedly packing up to 16 Zen5 cores and 40 Compute Units (CUs) based on RDNA3.5 architecture; this corroborates with earlier claims of the top chip’s specs. Cut-down variants include 12-core + 40-CU, and 8-core + 32-CU models, named Max 390 and Max 385 respectively. This explains why AMD has left a gap above its current top chip, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370.
Here’s a quick list of how the lineup looks like when you put all the names (leaked and official) together:
Segment | SKU | Architecture |
---|---|---|
Ryzen AI Max+ | 395 | Strix Halo |
Ryzen AI Max | 390, 385 | Strix Halo |
Ryzen AI 9 HX | 370 | Strix Point |
Ryzen AI 9 | 365 | Strix Point |
Ryzen AI 7 | PRO 360, (unknown consumer SKU) | Strix Point (PRO 360), Krackan (unknown consumer SKU) |
It looks like the Strix Halo will be mainly serving laptop workstations, as a recently spotted Geekbench entry shows one HP ZBook Ultra 14 G1a workstation laptop packing the 12-core version of the chip (Ryzen AI Max 390). This is a big shift from its predecessor, which packs Intel’s Meteor Lake processors paired with NVIDIA’s entry-level RTX A500 graphics – both of which are expected to be comprehensively beaten by the Ryzen processor in performance metrics if leaked specs are anything to go by.
