Good news for current owners of AMD-powered systems: according to Bits and Chips’ sources, the chipmaker will continue to retain cooler compatibility for its next-gen Socket AM6, which is currently expected to debut in 2028, likely alongside Zen 7.
Socket AM6 To Remain Cooler Compatible

“According to our sources, the AM6 AMD Socket will be very similar to the AM5 Socket. In order to continue its own tradition, AMD will allow us to reuse the coolers we are now using on AM5 Socket,” the Italian publication wrote. “The new AM6 Socket will have got about 2100 pins and will be commercialized during the 2028, when the uArch Zen 7 will be ready.”
As a matter of fact, some AMD coolers with the two-pronged bracket design has been known to work across two decades’ worth of CPUs, ranging from Socket 939 (launched in 2004) all the way to today’s Socket AM5. Of course, some coolers uses the 4-pin layout for their installation mechanism, but these should remain compatible as well, since the new socket is said to be very similar to AM5.

To support future CPUs architectures, the new socket will pack even more pins – roughly 2,100 of them – and will feature next-gen DDR6 and PCIe 6.0 support, both expected to be support in Zen 7 come 2028. For now, we’re still three years away from AM6, and three years into AM5, so there’s still plenty of time ahead for AMD’s contemporary desktop LGA socket.
