Latest Firmware On AMD Motherboards Hinted Next-Gen Ryzen CPUs

Looks like we may soon see new processors from Team Red: both ASUS and MSI have released the latest AGESA firmware that, as listed in the changelog, enables support for “next-gen” AMD Ryzen processors. Needless to say, AMD is likely to reveal the details of Zen5-based CPUs fairly soon – which should fall under the Ryzen 9000 series naming, if rumors are accurate.

Videocardz has spotted both Taiwanese motherboard makers releasing new firmware updates this week including changelogs indicating next-gen Ryzen support. MSI announced in a separate press release that all AMD 600 series motherboards will support AMD’s next-gen CPU via the AGESA ComboPI 1.1.7.0 Patch A BIOS update.

Ryzen 9000 series – assuming the naming is correct – is set to be powered by the upcoming Zen5 architecture, which is touted to bring significant performance increase over Zen4 counterparts. No change of socket is expected, given that AMD has publicly committed to supporting Socket AM5 until at least 2025. Effectively, any AMD owners with existing Socket AM5 motherboards can simply update the BIOS and perform a drop-in upgrade should they choose to do so.

As for when Team Red will be revealing the details of Zen5, it is strongly suggested that the upcoming Computex in June will be the time Zen5 officially gets unveiled. The chipmaker has showcased new Zen architectures during Computex before, notably Zen2’s debut in Computex 2019. The company has previously confirmed that Zen5 will indeed launch this year, so Computex will be where the technical details begin to emerge.
