Following months after Pat Gelsinger’s departure, Intel has announced Lip-Bu Tan will take the helm as the company’s new CEO, effective March 18. As a veteran in the now trillion-dollar chip industry, Tan will also rejoin Intel’s board of directors after stepping down in August 2024.

Lip-Bu Tan Appointed To Turn Intel Around

The 65-years-old Tan Lip-Bu (陈立武) is born Malaysian in Muar, Johor, and spent his childhood and subsequent education in neighboring Singapore with a Bachelor of Science in physics from Nanyang Technological University. Now an American citizen, he also holds a Master of Science in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and an MBA from the University of San Francisco. He is also a recipient of the Robert N. Noyce Award in 2022, which is among the highest honor awarded in the semiconductor industry.

Tan brings more than 20 years of experience in the semiconductor and software industries, serving as CEO of Cadence Design Systems from 2009 to 2021, along with chairmanship in the following two years. In addition to his role at Intel, Tan is a founding managing partner of Walden Catalyst Ventures and chairman of Walden International. He also serves on the boards of Credo Technology Group and Schneider Electric.

Following a disastrous campaign in 10nm node development at the tail end of the 2010s, Intel’s leadership in the semiconductor industry has been slowly eroded by AMD on the chipmaking side with its Ryzen and EPYC processors, while the foundry business, later opened to chipmaking customers by previous CEO Pat Gelsinger to help generate revenue, has seen little success to compete with TSMC. Tan will be taking on what is considered an extremely difficult task to turn the company around as it missed the emergence of AI in the industry.
