AMD Radeon RX 8000 GPUs To Use 18Gbps GDDR6 VRAM, Slower Than Predecessor
Previously, it was known that AMD was potentially cutting down its Radeon department’s gaming GPU efforts by leaving the enthusiast market, as the next-gen Radeon GPU will feature only two silicon variants, none of which will be marketed as an enthusiast GPU to compete with NVIDIA’s top models.
This makes it the first time since the Radeon RX 5000 series that AMD has left the enthusiast GPU market and instead focused on the more popular mid-range market with its offerings. As a result, some of the hardware specs will be cut down as well – according to serial GPU leaker @Kepler_L2, the upcoming GPUs will only use 18Gbps GDDR6 across all RDNA4 models.
For reference, only four desktop models use 18Gbps in RDNA3 today, which are RX 7900 GRE, RX 7700 XT, RX 7600 XT, and RX 7600. The remaining RDNA3 models use faster 20Gbps memory.
So it seems like Team Red is in no rush to get GDDR7 onboard as Team Green is looking into it to power its upcoming RTX 50 series GPUs (which will use 28Gbps GDDR7 to boot). While there are concerns about how the performance will end up, keep in mind that one of AMD’s biggest secret sauce comes in the form of Infinity Cache – this technology has been instrumental in keeping up with NVIDIA’s faster VRAMs despite having narrower memory buses back in the RTX 30 series vs. RX 6000 series matchup.
More information should follow down the line as leakers provide them, though be sure to apply some skepticism as with the nature of leaks. Currently, the launch period for RDNA4 GPUs is yet to be publicized, though some claim late 2024 is possible.
