NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 series users will soon see a new feature added to their GPUs, as the chipmaker has recently released a preview driver which introduces Smooth Motion to the said models. This feature was originally exclusive to RTX 50 series, as a driver-level implementation of frame generation technology that works on virtually all games.
Smooth Motion Coming To RTX 40 Series

Essentially, Smooth Motion is NVIDIA’s answer to AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) technology, which is Team Red’s way of making sure as many games can support frame generation as possible (since developers are not required to actively implement frame generation in their games), in an effort to compete against NVIDIA’s ever-expanding pool of natively supported DLSS Frame Generation titles.
Of course, being a driver-level feature means artifacts, particularly on UI elements, could happen; though this is gradually being solved with new AI models capable of telling these elements apart from the in-game scenes. Still, this remains a viable option for those with relatively weak hardware or unsupported games to get a quick boost in framerates.
If you are currently using an RTX 40 card right now, you can’t access the driver just yet – unless you’re a developer and has a developer account with NVIDIA. That said, it shouldn’t take too long before the feature is officially available, as preview drivers are usually one of the final steps before the chipmaker gives the green light for general release.
