MSI Releases Latest BIOS In Response To Blown Ryzen 7000 Chips
Most AMD 600 series motherboards is available with the patch, with the recent PRO A620M-E model still pending at this writing.
AMD Ryzen 7000 series has been making the headlines lately for the wrong reasons. To summarize: there were a number of reports with users having their Ryzen 7000 chips, X3D or otherwise, blowing itself up literally which ultimately killed the chip itself and sometimes takes the motherboard with it. The direct cause has been traced down to excessive SoC voltage (VSoC) set on certain motherboard models which greatly accelerated the degradation of the chip.
To contain the issue, motherboard manufacturers have been scrambling for a fix – most commonly to put a upper limit on VSoC to prevent the chip from pulling too much voltage based on certain EXPO profiles. “According to AMD’s design specifications, the Ryzen 7000X3D series CPU does not fully support overclocking or overvoltage adjustments,” MSI said in its press release. “However, AMD EXPO technology can be used to optimize memory performance by appropriately increasing the CPU SoC voltage to ensure system stability when operating at higher memory frequencies.”
It’s normal for overclocked RAM to pull extra voltage to ensure stability, though MSI in this case has adjusted the VSoC values for both X3D and standard chips as a precaution. “In the confirmation report from AMD team, it is recommended that the maximum limit of the CPU SoC voltage should be set at a safe range for Ryzen 7000X3D series CPU to mitigate potential CPU damage caused by inappropriate overclocking or overvoltage. With the same safety concern, we’ll also adjust the CPU SoC voltage for the regular Ryzen 7000 series CPU,” the company further added.
