PSA: Pink WhatsApp Is Not Real, And It Will Hurt You (And Your Data)
Everyone uses WhatsApp these days for all kinds of things – which makes it a perfect target for hackers to try spreading malware with a simple trick of social engineering. No, WhatsApp is not turning pink for any reason, it is in fact a potentially malicious app that MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) warranted a public service announcement to remind everyone of fake apps in the wild.
In the notice, MCMC noted that the app advertised itself as offering “better security and privacy features, customised interface, and the ability to transmit larger files than the popular WhatsApp application”. Given that chat app often ask for sensitive permissions such as photos, contacts and even SMS access, this of course poses a huge security risk.
The notice further noted that malicious actors may send download links through the legitimate WhatsApp app to invite users downloading the fraudulent app, and MCMC is further advising all users to not install the app in any circumstances, and should the app be already present on the device, remove it immediately.
It’s always a safe practice to download apps from verified sources such as Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Huawei AppGallery – and should anyone found any suspicious activity relating to the Pink WhatsApp, they can report it at Aduan MCMC portal here, or call the hotline at 1800-188-030.
Pokdepinion: Do NOT download apps outside of app stores – unless you know what you’re getting into. Careful out there!
