Earlier in COMPUTEX 2026, Cadence announced the extension of its ChipStack AI Super Agent to Level-5 autonomy, describing it as the first fully autonomous virtual AI design engineer for chip development. The system powered by NVIDIA Nemotron models, and runs within the NVIDIA OpenShell runtime (a sandboxed environment that enforces governance and access controls for sensitive IP).

At Level-5 autonomy, Cadence’s ChipStack AI Super Agent independently executes chip design and verification workflows without step-by-step prompting. The system evaluates intermediate results, determines next actions, and iterates across tasks including specification understanding, RTL generation, verification planning, formal analysis, simulation, debug, and design convergence. Engineers retain the ability to inspect and guide the agent’s progress, with compatibility for tools such as Codex and Claude Code providing visibility into autonomous activity.

In deployments at NVIDIA, thousands of engineers are using the ChipStack agents to run dynamic simulations with Cadence Xcelium Logic Simulation and Jasper Formal Verification. Cadence states this delivers over 40x faster RTL validation cycles, reducing a typical five-week verification loop to under one day.

The agent’s behaviour is coupled with Cadence’s physics-based design and verification engines, keeping AI-directed actions tied to signoff-accurate computational models. NVIDIA OpenShell provides policy controls, tool isolation, and managed access to design data to support production deployment.

Cadence acquired ChipStack in November 2025 and launched its first related product in February 2026. At CadenceLIVE in April 2026, the company expanded into a portfolio of AI super agents, introducing ViraStack (for custom and analog design), InnoStack (for digital implementation and signoff), and AgentStack (an orchestration framework for coordinating agentic workflows across the design stack).

The Level-5 autonomous capabilities of the ChipStack AI Super Agent and the AgentStack orchestration framework are expected to be available to early-access customers in the second half of 2026.

Pokdepinion: Could this mean faster product release cycles in the chipmaking industry? Time will tell.
