Microsoft reportedly in talks to buy Discord for $10 billion
Discord, our favorite gaming chat software might possibly be owned by none other than Microsoft soon. Xbox head Phil Spencer is reportedly trying to work out a deal to acquire the company.
If Microsoft acquires Discord, it might get pretty exciting, as Discord might become the de facto gaming voice communications platform on both Xbox and Windows. Integrating it into the increasingly feature-rich Xbox Games Bar will be quite interesting as well, but perhaps we are getting ahead of ourselves.
Discord is allegedly looking at a sum greater than $10 billion with multiple potential suitors, although it might be an attempt to gauge the value of the company. Some reports also point towards the company having a higher probability of going public than selling itself, considering how it has turned down a number of offers ranging up to $6 billion back in 2018.
It is also worth mentioning that Discord isn’t profitable yet, despite boasting 140 million users monthly and a great $130 million in revenue in 2020, up from $45 million in 2019. But then again, the user base is probably worth more than what they earn, as Discord only charges an optional $9.99/month for the Nitro subscription.
Pokdepinion: I have been using Discord since Dolby Axon was shut down. Hopefully this acquisition won’t result in huge privacy changes that will force me to move to another voice chat platform.
