Can’t keep track of side quests? This should help.

Valve brings a redesigned UI for the In-Game Overlay feature to match the new look across its main Steam app. This is currently on Beta for now – though among the features which include a new toolbar section and Game Overview, there’s a new one that can be fairly useful for players stuck in a lengthy or tricky level: Notes.

Functionally, it’s more or less the same as the one that comes with your current Windows install (called Sticky Notes). You can add multiple notes, use rich text format, and even online sync across multiple devices. Though, Steam’s take on notes have a few gaming-specific optimizations.

Players can pin the note right on top of the game – OLED users need not worry – with transparency adjustments available. Aside from that, the notes follow the game automatically, meaning it’ll pop up as soon as you launch the game which the notes are attached to, even across devices (and works offline, too).

The patch also adds hardware acceleration support for macOS and Linux versions of the Steam, which should improve the app performance. The update overall should arrive in desktop client, Big Picture Mode and Steam Deck simultaneously, though some features for the latter, such as Notes, will come at a later date. It’ll be some time before all of these arrives on stable release, so if you want to try it out, go ahead and opt in for Beta in the app settings.
