Messenger Returns to Facebook App After Splitting Apart 9 Years Ago
Messenger was born to be the “best mobile messaging experience” back then, but that didn’t work out for the company now called Meta.
Meta is bringing back Messenger to Facebook app after a nine-year hiatus. The social media giant announced that it has started rolling out the test to select users and expects to expand the release to the rest of the world in the coming weeks.
Messenger was separated from Facebook’s main app in 2014 as a standalone app, but it appears the company is now reversing course. Meta’s reasoning for reintegrating the messaging service is to provide users with a more streamlined experience. Head of Facebook, Tom Alison says it’s to “make it easier for people to share what they discover on Facebook via messaging, when, where and how it suits their needs, without needing to switch to another app.”
The fight between TikTok and Meta’s own platforms continues to heat up as the Zuckerberg-led company seeks to gain an competitive edge over the ever-increasing popularity of the short video-sharing platform. Alison noted the company wants to “make Facebook the best place for social discovery and sharing,” as they are taking the fight against TikTok head-on with the shift towards an entertainment-focused platform more than just socializing with friends and families.
