Apple has released major software updates across its platforms, with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and tvOS 27 all rolling out today, 15 September 2026. The iOS 27 update and its companion releases bring a broad range of performance improvements, design refinements, and a significantly expanded set of parental control tools aimed at helping families manage screen time and digital safety for children.
iOS 27 Performance and Platform Improvements
On iPhone and iPad, app launch speeds are up to 30 percent faster, photos load up to 70 percent faster after being taken, and AirDrop transfers are up to 80 percent faster compared to the previous release. On iPad specifically, browsing files and transferring them to an external USB drive is now up to five times faster, with additional improvements to window management during multitasking.

Mac users will notice snappier everyday performance across AirDrop transfers, iCloud Photos uploads, and transitions between Spaces and Mission Control. On Apple Watch, music playback is faster, and new Smart Stack widget suggestions surface contextually, with a new single-handed tap gesture to open them.
Connectivity has also been improved, with more seamless transitions between cellular and Wi-Fi on iPhone and iPad. In Messages, sending large photos or videos in low-bandwidth conditions no longer blocks subsequent texts from being delivered. Search across Spotlight, Photos, and Mail has been rebuilt to be more stable and comprehensive, and a new ranking system in Mail surfaces more relevant Top Hits results.
The Liquid Glass design language introduced earlier receives further refinements. A new slider in Settings lets users personalise the appearance of Liquid Glass, ranging from ultraclear to fully tinted. App icons have also been updated to appear sharper and more defined.
Other notable additions span multiple Apple products. iCloud Shared Albums now support full-resolution sharing for photos and videos, with easier access for Android and Windows users. The Health app adds perimenopause and menopause support to Cycle Tracking, including relevant cycle deviation notifications. AirPods users gain a three-band custom EQ (low, mid, high) accessible directly from AirPods Settings. Apple Maps receives an enhanced Flyover experience that combines aerial imagery with AI for more detailed city visuals. On Apple TV, the update brings high-resolution lossless audio support for Apple Music, a redesigned Podcasts app, and broader text-size accessibility options.
New Child Safety Features and Redesigned Screen Time
The iOS 27 update introduces a substantially reworked set of parental controls. A new child account setup flow makes it easier for parents to enable age-based safeguards from the start, including selecting exactly which apps their children can access, with the ability to expand access gradually over time. Child accounts are required for users under 13 and available for those up to 18.

Ask to Browse requires parental approval before a child can visit a new website in Safari. Parents can also control who their children connect with via Messages, FaceTime, and Phone, and require approval for any new contact. Communication Safety has been expanded to detect and block gore and violent content in addition to nudity, covering shared images, videos, and FaceTime calls.

Screen Time has been redesigned with a clearer at-a-glance view of a child’s average device usage and top apps. New Time Allowances tools let parents set daily limits across Entertainment, Games, and Social Media categories, informed by guidance from clinical and child development experts. Schedules allow control over which apps are accessible at different points during the day. Screen Time Passcode Notifications will alert parents if the Screen Time passcode is entered on a child’s device.
Apple has published a dedicated resource page at apple.com/my/child-safety with details on these tools and how to get started.
Apple Intelligence and Siri AI Availability
Apple Intelligence features are available in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and watchOS 27 for users on supported devices set to a supported language. Supported hardware includes iPhone Duo, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPad models with M1 or later, MacBook Neo (A18 Pro), Mac with M1 or later, Apple Vision Pro, Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, and Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.
Siri AI is rolling out as a beta in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support coming in October. Apple Intelligence supports a total of 16 languages at launch, including Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Dutch, German, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Turkish, and Vietnamese. Siri AI is not available for users under 13.
Certain Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models, including Siri AI, intelligent photo editing tools, Image Playground, and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts, are subject to daily usage limits. Apple has noted that expanded access to these features will be available for a fee in the future.
All updates are available today as a free download. Users can update by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update on their device.
Pokdepinion: Buried deep in this announcement is the fact that while its all exciting, it might be limited by how much you can afford to keep running the AI features. I hope it will allow the usage of existing AI models like Claude Pro to run them. Otherwise, this might be a huge downer.
