SAIC Motor Malaysia has expanded its locally assembled MGS5 lineup with the introduction of the MGS5 EV COM (short for ‘comfort’), serving as an entry-level variant for the automaker’s electric SUV which target the likes of Proton e.MAS 7 and BYD Atto 3.
MGS5 EV Now Available In Two Variants
The MGS5 EV is now offered in two variants: the COM, with a driving range of up to 340km, and the LUX, with a driving range of up to 446km. Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia, said the new COM variant is intended to make rear-wheel drive electric B-segment SUV ownership more accessible to a broader range of Malaysian customers while retaining the model’s core features.

The COM variant is equipped with a 49kWh battery producing 170PS and 250Nm of torque, which is a fair bit less than the LUX variant’s 62kWh battery producing 203PS and 350Nm of torque. As a result, the COM variant gets to 100km/h in 8.0 seconds, taking an extra second over the LUX variant. DC charging is also capped at 120kW instead of 150kW, but otherwise the safety and convenience feature set are largely the same across both models.
The COM variant features fabric seats, 17-inch black alloy wheels, and does not include a panoramic sunroof; the LUX variant includes leatherette seats with a perforated design, ventilated and power-adjustable front seats, a heated leather steering wheel, 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and a hands-free powered tailgate.
Both variants are equipped with seven airbags and MG’s Pilot ADAS 2.5 driver assistance system, which includes Traffic Jam Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control. The vehicle also features an ultra-thin battery layout, which helps to lower the center of gravity (and thus, handling), as well as increasing interior space.

The COM variant is available in Silver and Grey exterior colors, while the LUX variant is available in five colors, including Gold, Silver, and Grey. Both variants feature a dark interior theme, with fabric seats for the COM and leatherette seats for the LUX.
The MGS5 EV COM is priced at RM103,900, while the LUX variant is priced at RM116,900, both in Peninsula Malaysia and excluding road tax and insurance. The COM variant is now available for viewing and bookings at MG showrooms nationwide. All MGS5 EV variants come with a seven-year or 150,000km vehicle warranty, an eight-year or 180,000km battery pack warranty, and an eight-year or 160,000km Motor Control Unit warranty.
Pokdepinion: A cheaper variant that still keeps seven airbags and the same driver-assist tech is not a bad trade-off.
