Meet Canon EOS R8 Mark II – a compact 24.2-megapixel full-frame mirrorless camera that succeeds the EOS R8. The Mark II brings Coordinated Control IS (image stabilization), new creative tools, and a redesigned body to the entry-level full-frame segment, while incorporating controls previously exclusive to higher-end EOS R series models.

The Canon EOS R8 Mark II’s design is a “modern reinterpretation of Canon’s iconic pentaprism form,” featuring a new design that “blends linearity with curves.” It measures approximately 131.4 x 90.0 x 79.7mm and weighs around 546g, making it Canon’s smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera to feature In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS). Despite its compact dimensions, it is also the first EOS R series full-frame camera in its class to include a multi-controller joystick, for intuitive autofocus point selection without pulling the eye away from the viewfinder.
The full-frame CMOS sensor on the EOS R8 Mark II offers approximately 2.5x the light-gathering surface area of an APS-C sensor, which translates to better low-light performance, reduced image noise, and a wider field of view at the same focal length. The built-in 5-axis IBIS corrects camera shake during handheld shooting – when paired with a compatible RF lens featuring in-lens stabilization, the Coordinated Control IS system delivers stabilization equivalent to up to 7.5 stops at the center and 7.0 stops at the edges, compliant with CIPA 2024 standards.
Autofocus is handled by the deep learning-based Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system, which supports Pre-Continuous Shooting and a maximum burst rate of up to 40fps using the electronic shutter. A Register People Priority mode allows specific individuals to be preregistered for priority autofocus tracking, useful in crowded scenes.
On the creative side, the EOS R8 Mark II introduces two new Color Filters named “NegativeFilmtone” and “PositiveFilmtone,” joining the existing 14 filter options. Handheld Night Scene Mode for stills gains four new color settings: Blue, Black and Orange, Pink, and Green. The interval timer function also adds exposure smoothing, timer priority, and delayed start options for time-lapse control.
A Creative AUTO mode with an intuitive interface makes its debut on a full-frame EOS camera here, while Background Blur Creative Assist has been extended to video mode, and a shortcut can be configured to apply defocus automatically at a preset blur level and speed.
For video, the camera supports 6K-oversampled 4K 60FPS recording, up to Full HD 180FPS, and Canon Log 3 for color-grading workflows. A Custom Picture function adapted from the Cinema EOS range supports Custom LUTs and advanced picture parameter control. Four livestreaming options are available, including multi-angle streaming through the Live Switcher Mobile app.
The EOS R8 Mark II also supports VR content creation through compatibility with full-frame and APS-C VR lenses, along with the new VR Clear Mode, which enhances contrast and clarity for VR goggle output without requiring post-editing. Still photos can additionally be converted into 3D models using the new Dual Pixel 3D Converter software, which draws on depth data from the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system.
Canon is also introducing three new accessories alongside the EOS R8 Mark II: the Extension Grip EG-E2 is designed specifically for this camera to provide better hold, whereas the Tripod Grip HG-1000TBR is a multi-function tripod grip bundled with the Bluetooth Remote Controller BR-E2. The Speedlite EL-5 (Ver. 2) is an updated flash unit featuring an expanded wireless communication range of approximately 50m, up from the 30m range of the original Speedlite EL-5.
