The Next Apple Magic Mouse Will Finally Fix The Charging Port Design

One of the things that absolutely triggers my nerd rage is the seemingly unexplainable design of Apple’s Magic Mouse – particularly, the dreaded charging port located at the bottom. I mean, seriously – who thought this was a good idea?

In any case, it looks like Apple finally has decided to grace the world of another human-interface perfection that finally fixes the problem of awkward charging port location that virtually no other mice in the world has ever had, if the resident Apple leaker Mark Gurman is anything to go by (via The Verge).

New Magic Mouse?

Unhinged rant aside – one of the biggest complaints of the current Magic Mouse comes down to several fundamental design issues, including awkward grip, and the charging port that hides under the mouse which effectively forces you to stop using it if you need to recharge the battery. What’s going to change in the new design, however, is still very much up in the air.

Gurman notes that the team over at Cupertino is already working on the new design which “better fits the modern era,” and one certain fix is the charging port, among other “longstanding complaints.” Still, whatever it may be, he said it’s still at least 12 to 18 months away from launch. (Funnily enough, the company recently updated the current design with USB-C ports, but it’s the same old location that makes people like me facepalms in disbelief.)

If you’re still wondering why Apple put the charging port down the bottom, the most common explanation seems to be a design relic of an era where small devices used to be powered by alkaline batteries. While Apple made the transition to lithium-ion batteries since then, it couldn’t work around the charging problem without warranting a whole redesign – of which the company has refused to do until now.

Still, if you appreciate ergonomics and don’t mind the bulkiness, plenty of mice exists out there that should treat your wrists a lot better than the current design, but here’s hoping the new one won’t come with its own set of controversial issues. One can hope!
