New Acer Swift 5 coming in October with Intel Tiger Lake processors
Most of the products announced yesterday at Acer’s #NextAtAcer Global Press Conference 2020 touted the 10th Gen Intel Core processors, but Acer also took the opportunity to tease the new Acer Swift 5 with the upcoming 11th Gen Intel Tiger Lake processors.
Acer was frugal with the details, only mentioning the processor as the next gen Intel Core processor with powerful integrated graphics based on Intel’s new Xe architecture. Interestingly, while the Tiger Lake processors showcased some pretty impressive GPU performance, Acer will still be throwing in a GeForce MX350 for good measure.
But even if we ignore the fact that it will sport Intel’s most interesting mobile processor yet, the Acer Swift 5 is still very noteworthy. For one, this laptop will be one of the lightest laptops you have ever seen. It will pack all that hardware while staying under 1kg. This is thanks to the use of magnesium-lithium alloy in its construction, which seems to be the new favorite material for laptop makers designing ultralight machines.
Acer also appears to have taken some rather obvious inspiration from its competition, with a hinge that elevates the laptop when the screen is opened for improved thermals and typing experience. This allows the svelte 14.95 mm laptop to offer a more ergonomic typing experience, which is not usually the case with ultra-thin laptops.
In its sleek body made of magnesium-lithium and magnesium-aluminium alloys, Acer will also be cramming in up to 16GB LPDDR4X memory and 1TB of PCIe SSD storage. In light of the current pandemic, Acer decided to use the Antimicrobial Corning Gorilla Glass to cover the touch-sensitive 14″ FHD IPS display panel, which offers a whopping 90% screen-to-body ratio.
Connectivity options include Thunderbolt, USB 3.2 Gen2, HDMI and WiFi 6 giving you the full plethora of connectivity options to expand the Acer Swift 5 into a full-blown workstation.
