After the early launch in China last year, HUAWEI today has announced the launch of the HUAWEI Mate XT ULTIMATE DESIGN in Malaysia. This foldable is the first-ever tri-fold form factor ever sold in the market, which folds in a Z shape (or ‘N’ depending on how you look at it).

The main feature is of course the tri-fold display: when fully unfolded, the screen size measures 10.2 inches with a 3K (3184×2232) resolution and 16:11 aspect ratio, while the dual-screen mode and single-screen mode measures 7.9 and 6.4 inches respectively. The idea of a tri-fold, according to the keynote presented earlier today, is that video can now fill up most of the screen with minimal letterboxing, as most foldables often has near-square aspect ratios. It also has a bonus feature that allows the foldable to prop itself up while still using two-thirds of the screen.

The Huawei Mate XT ULTIMATE DESIGN adopts what the brand calls ‘symmetric Star Diamond design’, continuing the aesthetic approach of previous Ultimate Design models; housed inside the gold-accented sinusoidal ring is the Huawei XMAGE camera system that features a 10-step adjustable mechanical aperture on its main 50MP sensor for realistic bokeh shots, while 12MP sensors takes care of both ultrawide and telephoto duties, with the latter capable of zooming 5.5x optically via a periscope layout.

Elsewhere, the specs include 12.8mm combined thickness, though it gets as thin as 3.6mm when fully unfolded; one downside is of course the weight, which comes at a hefty 298g. Battery is split into three units with a combined 5,600mAh capacity, charged via 50W wireless fast charging or 66W wired fast charging. Chipset is not officially disclosed in the spec sheet (though it is known that Kirin 9010 powers it), while 16GB RAM and 1TB storage should be plenty.

Of course, with so much tech packed into a single device, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design, available in Red or Black, will be commanding a staggering RM14,999 price tag. Pre-orders are open until 14 March 2025, and customers who pre-order will receive a one-year screen protection plan valued at RM3,999.
