Nothing Invites The Community To Create A Special Phone (2a) Variant
These days, smartphones are not much more than a slab of glass aluminum sandwich with a coat of paint, minimalist looks, and simple packaging. London-based smartphone brand Nothing has made itself a name for bucking the trend of samey-samey smartphones, and now the company is taking a step further by inviting the community to build the Phone (2a) as they see fit.
The community creation project will take six months spanning four stages – during this period, Nothing will collect design submissions for their idea of how should the Phone (2a) look, including aspects such as hardware, wallpapers, packaging, and even the way it will be marketed towards the public. Winners at each stage will be able to collaborate directly with Nothing’s team to materialize their ideas.
The first stage – hardware design – kicks off on 26 March 2024, followed by wallpaper design on May 2024, packaging design on June 2024, and finally rounding off through marketing campaign submissions which begins on July 2024. Users can simply submit images, videos, or other supported media that “best showcase their corresponding idea.” The closing of each stage will be followed by a voting session, accompanied by Nothing’s expert panel to decide the winner.
“We believe in a future where the boundaries of what a company is and what the community is, will be erased and hopefully become the same thing. In the future, maybe the community can also contribute code to Nothing OS or maybe they can create other products with us. We’ve got to believe in people and in the democratization of information and knowledge,” said Carl Pei, CEO and co-founder of Nothing.
Winners of all stages will be invited to London to witness the launch of the Phone (2a) Community Edition, which will function as the official launch event for the model before it goes on sale. If you have ideas, give it a shot by visiting the submission page here.
