After much hoo-ha about OnePlus adopting a unified OS that will offer the combined strength of ColorOS and OxygenOS, it seems that they have backtracked on it. And for good measure as well, as OnePlus fans were pretty vocal about their disapproval when it comes to bringing more of ColorOS to OnePlus devices. But hey, it might not be all that different after all.

OnePlus backtracks on ColorOS plans, but will still share unified codebase

For the uninitiated, the R&D teams for OnePlus and OPPO has been merged, and OnePlus also announced that OxygenOS will share the same codebase with ColorOS. Then later in September, OnePlus shared more about “OnePlus 2.0”, which would have seen a unified OS shared by OPPO and OnePlus devices, which would offer the  “fast and smooth, burdenless experience” of OxygenOS and the “stability and rich features” of ColorOS.

OnePlus OxygenOS ColorOS codebase

Obviously, OnePlus fans were not particularly into the whole idea of it. So now, OnePlus has apparently backtracked on that decision, and we will continue seeing OnePlus devices coming with OxygenOS out of the box. They will still share the same codebase, but OxygenOS will apparently still offer a “lighter experience closer to stock Android designed for global usage.”

While OxygenOS and ColorOS will continue to be developed on the same codebase – to allow for faster updates and better build quality – OxygenOS and ColorOS will remain independent brand properties. This new course was taken in accordance with feedback from our Community – we understand users of OxygenOS and ColorOS want each operating system to remain separate from each other with their own distinct properties.

So yeah, OnePlus fans can still look forward to enjoying OxygenOS on future OnePlus devices. At least until OnePlus and OPPO decide once again to combine their software development efforts to save costs.
