While many of us are probably waiting for the realme 6 Pro, realme Malaysia has decided to unveil the more affordable realme 6i first. The realme 6i has previously been leaked several times, and we will soon see it in Malaysia, albeit virtually.

realme Malaysia will be hosting an online launch event for the realme 6i, similar to what they did for the realme 6 previously. The device is expected to slot in somewhere below the realme 6, which should allow it compete more directly against Redmi’s Note 9S, at least in terms of pricing.

I would expect it to do too well against the Redmi Note 9S though, as the chipset of the realme 6i has been confirmed to be the Helio G80, with realme Malaysia teasing the device with the hashtag #MYFirstG80. The Snapdragon 720G in the Redmi Note 9S is also featured in the realme 6 Pro, and Qualcomm’s latest mid-range offering is a better match for the Helio G90T than the Helio G80.

Here are the specifications of the realme 6i, as it was launched last month in Myanmar:

realme 6i Specs

  • MediaTek Helio G80, octa-core up to 2.0 GHz, 12nm
  • Up to 4GB RAM
  • Up to 128GB storage
  • 6.5″ HD+ display, 89.8% screen to body ratio
  • 48MP f/1.8 + 8MP f/2.3 ultra-wide + 2MP f/2.4 macro + 2MP f/2.4 depth
  • 16MP f/2.0 selfie camera
  • 5000 mAh battery, 18W quick charge
  • 3GB + 64GB: MMK 249 900 (~RM760)
    4GB + 128GB: MMK 299 900 (~RM913)

With no idea of how Burmese smartphone pricing translates to our local pricing, the only thing that we can safely assume for now is that the realme 6i will be cheaper than the realme 6. I don’t expect them to dare to charge too much for the HD display panel that they have been reusing since the realme 5 was launched.

The converted pricing is definitely too close to the Redmi Note 9S, and I don’t believe any sane consumer would pay those prices for such poor specifications. Hopefully the local pricing will be a fair bit lower. There’s the possibility of realme Malaysia marketing an entirely different RAM and storage configuration here as well, as they did for the realme 6. The realme 6 available here in Malaysia features 4GB RAM and 128GB storage, a configuration that was not offered during the Indian launch.

Well, all we have to do is to wait until 8.30pm 16th April to find out the pricing of the realme 6i! realme is also expected to bring in the special Green Tea and White Milk colors options designed by none other than Naoto Fukasawa, the man behind the realme X2 Pro Master Edition.

Pokdepinion: The White Milk color looks pretty good, although the name is definitely on the weirder side of things.
