Xiaomi might be one of the first to offer the yet unannounced Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus, with the Xiaomi 12 Ultra. Xiaomi announced the Mi 11 Ultra based on the same Snapdragon 888 as the Mi 11, while offering better cameras and a secondary display on the back, but this time they might want to change things around by offering an upgrade under the hood as well. The Xiaomi 12 Ultra has been certified featuring the SM8475 chipset, versus the SM8450 aka Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 featured in the rest of the Xiaomi 12 series flagships.

The Xiaomi 12 Ultra will be positioned higher than the Xiaomi 12 Pro, which is already a pretty impressive flagship with a triple 50MP camera array. It would be interesting to see how Xiaomi will further up their game with the Xiaomi 12 Ultra. According to Digital Chat Station, the Xiaomi 12 Ultra will make an appearance in Q3 2022.

With that said, Qualcomm is reportedly pushing for an earlier launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus. Qualcomm is reportedly dumping Samsung’s foundries for TSMC, with much of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1’s thermal issues allegedly attributed to the lackluster of Samsung’s 4nm manufacturing process. TSMC’s manufacturing is widely regarded to be superior to Samsung’s, and should allow Qualcomm to offer improved efficiency.

What this might mean is that Qualcomm will either be able to squeeze a larger overclock for more performance out of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus, or offer a more modest performance uplift with a lower power draw, and thus less heat output. Considering the issues faced by the Snapdragon 888 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, I have a strong feeling that Qualcomm will decide to go with the latter.

Pokdepinion: The Mi 11 Ultra felt a bit gimmicky coming from the Mi 11, so hopefully the Xiaomi 12 Ultra will not suffer a similar fate.
