EA Sports And EA Games Are Now Two Separate Entities Under Electronic Arts
Electronic Arts is going through a bit of organization restructuring recently, and the biggest change to come out of it is EA Sports and EA Games are now separate entities. Adding to that, your next EA Games title will no longer bear this name – as the organization will now be renamed as EA Entertainment.
For reference – EA Sports is responsible for the video game giant’s officially-licensed sports titles, including the recently-acquired Formula 1 (racing), Madden NFL (American football), PGA Tour (golf), NHL (ice hockey), UFC (martial arts) and formerly FIFA (the license is expiring, and moving forward it’ll be renamed as EA Sports FC instead). EA Entertainment meanwhile manages fictional IPs such as Battlefield, Need for Speed, Mass Effect, Dead Space, Titanfall and more.
The name change should make the statement pretty clear that EA is moving beyond just games. “We’re building the future of interactive entertainment on a foundation of legendary franchises and innovative new experiences, which represents massive opportunities for growth,” said Andrew Wilson, CEO of EA. “Our business remains strong,” he further added, to put out any doubts on the company’s performance.
What the result may end up be is of course anyone’s guess right now – but from the announcement, it looks like much of the lower-level personnel will remain as-is for now. Vince Zampella will continue his leadership at Respawn Entertainment and DICE, creators of Titanfall (Apex Legends) and Battlefield franchise respectively; and Cam Weber will continue on leading the Sports arm. The change also promises more independent control for the two new entities, though both will of course remain under EA CEO’s oversight.
