As games continue to grow in complexity, so will its storage requirements be. Games used to take up 1GB or less and now, 100GB seems to become more common. Microsoft is looking to tackle storage space issues with the Xbox Series X expandable SSD storage.

According to details from a data dump on the next-gen console, there is an unmarked slot in the rear. This is said to be a memory card slot of sorts for you to gain extra storage on the console. The Xbox Series X expandable SSD storage cards will be known as “Xbox Series X Storage Expansion cards”, and it is developed in partnership with Seagate.

It’s no secret that the both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will be ditching HDDs as storage devices in favour of the speedy SSD. They are much faster but it’s also much pricier than your standard HDD. This expansion card will instantly add 1TB of storage space for the console.

How Does the Xbox Series X Expandable SSD Storage Perform?

The expansion card is said to perform similarly to the internal storage, and will come with more storage sizes in the future. At the moment, we are only aware of a 1TB model but we expect more to be unveiled in the future. At the moment, no pricing information is available just yet but if price is a concern, you still have the option of plugging in an external HDD to the console via USB.

Microsoft Xbox Series X is currently set to launch sometime in Holiday 2020. If you missed out on the in-depth specification reveal, click right here.
