It appears that chipmaker Qualcomm may have plans to launch their own Android game console with designs clearly inspired by the Nintendo Switch. Here’s what we know about it thus far.

Recently, we reported about the Nintendo Switch Pro potentially having DLSS support in order to play 4K games. Now, Qualcomm may be taking some notes from them as they are potentially looking to launch an Android game console inspired by the hybrid game system.

From what we know thus far, it’s said to be an Android-based games console with a “less traditional form factor” with detachable controllers. It’s expected to run on a custom version of Android 12, looks somewhat like a bulkier Android smartphone, and it will have a whopping 6,000mAh battery with Quick Charge to power it up.

Unlike your standard Android smartphone, it’s expected to be able to output to an external display. Unfortunately, no word yet on whether this will be done via USB-C or a variation of the standard HDMI connector. It is believed that it will be using the older X55 modem, with support for 5G connectivity and even GPS. However, it will not be able to function as a smartphone on its own, so you can’t make calls and send SMS text messages with it.

If this project ends up becoming a reality, Qualcomm will be targeting for a Q1 2022 launch for this Android game console. Currently, the forecasted retail price is USD$300 (RM1,238.35), but that will be subjected to change as we get closer to launch date if it happens. Not to mention, the price could differ depending on what’s being included, such as the detachable controllers. We will report more on this as soon as information becomes available so stay tuned.

Pokdepinion: I’m personally not sure a standalone Android game console could work. Any console would need substantial exclusives to drive sales, otherwise, people might as well just opt for smartphones and game on that instead.
