Windows 10 is on its final days – with official support ending this October which means technical support and security patches will cease by then, but it looks like many users are still reluctant to upgrade to Windows 11 (or simply couldn’t). Steam’s latest hardware survey shows nearly half of its users are still on the soon-to-be-decade-old operating system, which is now less than 8 months away from end-of-life status.

Windows 10 Remains Popular

It’s worth noting that this figure is obtained from users that installs the Steam marketplace on their PCs, meaning this rules out many business or corporate machines that can skew this number in some way. Still, with Steam being the most popular game client on PCs, this does indicate that Windows 10 is still popular today, despite how close the operating system is approaching its end-of-support date of October 14, 2025.

The adoption rate for Windows 11 has been slowly but surely climbing since its introduction back in 2021, and a large part of its slow adoption comes down to stringent system requirements (TPM 2.0), which rules out many functional and some decently capable machines from ever running the new operating system. Other complaints of the new Windows include issues with the new user interface, overly excessive product tie-ins, and more.

Still, Microsoft has made it extremely clear by now that the only way to receive technical and security support is to upgrade to Windows 11 before Windows 10 reaches end-of-life this October, and the company is not changing its TPM requirement to lower the entry barrier either. You have 8 months left to do so – if your machine is not compatible, buying a new PC may be your only option.
