There have been many complaints throughout the CS2 era, but cheating has been at the top of the list for a long time. Many have found themselves playing less and less because of rampant cheaters using ESPs, wallhacks, and aimbots. Fortunately, in recent months, it seems like Valve is starting to take CS2 cheating more seriously.

Recent updates and community reports suggest that Valve Anti-Cheat is becoming more effective at identifying and removing cheaters. Valve has also continued making technical changes to its anti-cheat systems, including a recent fix for an issue that allowed malicious players to avoid being processed by VACnet.

If this progress continues, it could be one of the most important developments for Counter-Strike 2 in months.

Is Valve Finally Winning the Fight Against CS2 Cheaters?

Cheating has always been somewhat present in Counter-Strike but the CS2 player base is the most vocal about it. Playing a competitive shooter means having trust in your opponents. In the mind of a player, if they face an opponent who is clearly using cheats, the outcome of the match feels worthless.

That is why recent improvements to VAC are so important.

There is still no reason to claim that CS2 is suddenly completely free of cheaters. No anti-cheat system can realistically guarantee that. However, if the current detection and ban activity continues to catch accounts that previously slipped through, Valve could finally be moving toward a more proactive approach.

For regular players, the biggest difference would be simple: fewer suspicious matches.

A player playing several competitive games without seeing an obvious cheater is far more likely to keep playing. This actually can impact player retention more than a patch or update ever could.

CS2 Has Been Losing Players for Seven Straight Months

The timing matters because CS2 has been going through a prolonged decline in average player numbers.

Steam Charts data shows that the game’s average concurrent player count fell month after month from March through September 2026. The average dropped from more than 1.08 million players in February to around 805,000 in September, marking seven consecutive months of decline.

That does not mean Counter-Strike 2 is suddenly unpopular. It remains one of the largest games on Steam, with daily peaks still reaching well above one million players. But the sustained downward trend is difficult to ignore.

Cheating could definitely not be the only reason for player loss. There can be many reasons for seasonal variations, updates, and competing titles. Improving matchmaking quality and reducing cheating could help remove the main source of player frustration.

The CS2 Skin Economy Has Also Been Under Pressure

The player decline is happening alongside a difficult period for the CS2 skin economy.

Market data shows that many skins have lost value during 2026. For example, one September market analysis found that its tracked CS2 market declined by 4.8% during the month, with roughly 70% of tracked items losing value. Cases were hit particularly hard, falling 14.6% in that report.

Another market report placed the median decline for tracked variants at 3.1% during September.

The market is obviously more complicated than simply saying “CS2 skins are crashing.” Individual knives, gloves, stickers and weapon skins can move in completely different directions. Nevertheless, the broader market has clearly experienced pressure.

For traders and collectors, that makes choosing where and how to trade even more important. Players looking to compare marketplaces can explore the best CS2 skin trading sites to research available options, fees and trading conditions before making a decision.

A Cleaner CS2 Could Help the Skin Market Too

At first, VAC improvements and skin prices may seem unrelated. They are not.

The CS2 skin economy depends heavily on an active player base. More players mean more matches, more interest in cosmetics, more trading activity and potentially more demand for desirable items.

If Valve can make competitive matchmaking feel safer, some players who stopped playing may eventually return. New players may also be more willing to stay with CS2 if they are not constantly running into suspicious opponents.

That creates a potential chain reaction:

Better VAC → Fewer Cheaters → Better Matches → More Players → More Trading Activity → Stronger Skin Demand

Of course, this is not guaranteed. A stronger anti-cheat system alone cannot instantly reverse months of declining player numbers or make every skin appreciate in value. But it could remove a major obstacle standing between CS2 and a healthier future.

What Happens If VAC Keeps Improving?

The biggest question now is consistency.

A few successful ban waves or technical improvements will not be enough. Players need to see that Valve can maintain effective detection over the long term. Cheat developers will continue adapting, meaning the fight will never really end.

If Valve keeps improving VAC while also delivering meaningful gameplay updates, fixing bugs and supporting the competitive ecosystem, CS2 could gradually rebuild player confidence.

That would also give the skin economy a better foundation. A growing and engaged player base creates more reasons for people to buy, sell, collect and trade skins.

CS2 Could Be Entering a New Phase

The last several months have not been easy for Counter-Strike 2. Player numbers have declined for seven consecutive months, while the skin economy has experienced broad downward pressure.

But the latest anti-cheat developments offer something the game has desperately needed: hope.

Valve still has plenty of work to do, and it would be premature to declare the CS2 VAC problem completely solved. However, if the current improvements continue to catch cheaters effectively, the benefits could extend far beyond individual matches.

A cleaner competitive environment could bring back frustrated players, improve CS2’s statistics and increase engagement across the entire ecosystem. And if more players return, the skin market could eventually benefit from that renewed activity as well.

For now, the best thing Valve can do is keep the momentum going. If VAC continues working properly, CS2 may finally have a real opportunity to turn its recent decline around.
