In a rather surprising move, Sony is looking to further bolster their efforts in the Esports space as they have recently filed a patent for an Esports gambling and betting platform.

According to Vida Extra, Sony has filed a patent for an Esports gambling and betting platform. It was filed by Machine Learning Engineer for PlayStation R&D, Michaelo Chow. The patent has the following abstract:

Odds for various propositions concerning the play of a computer simulation are determined and presented to a viewer for pecuniary or non-pecuniary wagering purposes. The odds may be determined using past game analytics, or may be determined parimutuelly.

From what we understand, the platform will be able to give participants the probability of a better based of past data. The odds can be determined parimutuelly as well. For those of you who aren’t aware, parimutuelly means to divide the gains among winning betters.

Interestingly, it’s not just money that people can use to bet as there is a mention of non-pecuniary wagering. This potentially points to the use of in-game items to bet, with CS:GO being one of the most popular examples of it.

This move may not be seen favourably by the public, especially given the industry’s highlight on the use of microtransactions and loot boxes. However, a patent doesn’t necessarily mean that something will actually come out of it. For now, we will just have to wait and see so stay tuned for further updates.

Pokdepinion: This might not be seen favourably by the community but then again, this sounds like something no one is forced to take part in, and those involved do so intentionally. Would definitely keep a close eye out on this one to see what comes next.
