One of the key features of next gen console gaming for both the PS5 and Xbox Series X is variable refresh rate. While many people expected the PS5 variable refresh rate feature to be included right out of the box, that doesn’t appear to be the case. It will however be coming in a future firmware update.

The PS5 variable refresh rate feature is one of the few things that truly sets it apart from the previous generation. As such, a lot of gamers have been hunting for a new TV / monitor as you need one that supports the feature. Now, we know for sure that the killer feature will be coming via a future firmware update.

PS5 hardware supports VRR through HDMI 2.1.After a future system software update, PS5 owners will be able to use the VRR feature of compatible TVs when playing games that support VRR.

It’s worth pointing out the part about “playing games that support VRR” as this would indicate that not every game will support the feature. Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of gamers who would this feature to be applied in every single game released for the next gen platform. With that being said however, there’s no official confirmation on which games will have support for the PS5 variable refresh rate feature.

For those of you who aren’t aware, VRR (variable refresh rate) isn’t exclusive to the console. Many PC gamers have already experienced this feature for years now. What it does is that it allows your display to adjust the refresh rate accordingly with the frames that are being pushed by the game. The result is that you get more stable frame rates and stuttering will be mostly eliminated.

Once again, you will need a TV or monitor that can support the feature as not every display is capable of doing that. With year end sales and Black Friday coming up, it would be the perfect time to shop for one if you haven’t done so already.

Pokdepinion: I personally expected the PS5 variable refresh rate feature to be included right out of the box. Not sure why there’s a need to lock it first but then again, the extra development work on games for it could be why.
