The series debuts with “The Artistry of Ayanga,” a photography exhibition featuring over 25 images documenting the creation of “The Message,” an original musical by actor and composer Ayanga, one of China’s recognised musical theatre performers known for his lead role in the Chinese production of “The Phantom of the Opera.” The musical is based on Mai Jia’s spy novel of the same name.

The photographs capture moments from the production process, including rehearsals and performance milestones, offering a view of the collaborative work behind the musical. The exhibition is open to the public at The Langham, Shanghai, Xintiandi until 10 September 2026.

Bob van den Oord, CEO of Langham Hospitality Group, said The Langham has served as a gathering place for artists for 160 years, adding that “Luminaries in Residence” extends this tradition by creating opportunities for guests to engage more closely with the brand’s Luminaries and their work.

The “Luminaries in Residence” series builds on The Langham’s “Your Story. Our Legacy.” campaign, launched in 2025 to highlight figures from culture, design, and gastronomy connected to the brand. Ayanga joined as a Langham Luminary in early 2026. The Langham stated the event series will continue across its properties globally, with upcoming experiences to feature violinist Joshua Bell, along with further collaborations to be announced.
