AMD’s dominance in low overhead APIs like DirectX 12 and Vulkan is not to be trifled with. The AMD Radeon-optimized World War Z features both DirectX 11 and Vulkan APIs, and AMD Radeon cards come up much faster than their NVIDIA counterparts when the latter API is used.

In these benchmarks by GameGPU, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti has its bottom handed to it by even the air-cooled Radeon RX Vega 64 at 1080p. The Radeon RX Vega 56 achieves a similar minimum FPS as NVIDIA’s flagship card too, but loses out a bit on the maximum FPS. As the resolution increases, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti regains its footing, before finally beating the Radeon VII by a hair at 4K.

AMD takes the lead in Vulkan

A similarly intriguing scene is also happening in the lower end, where the Radeon RX 590 whoops the GeForce RTX 2070 at 1080p, before seceding at 4K. Vulkan’s benefit diminishes at higher resolutions because the CPU becomes much less of a bottleneck at the higher resolutions. But still, considering the price gap between the cards, I can definitely say AMD did well for themselves in World War Z.

NVIDIA retakes the lead in DirectX 11…

Once we switch back to DirectX 11, we see the NVIDIA cards regain their proper positions. We still see the Radeon RX Vega 64 match the GeForce RTX 2080, so that is still a pretty good showing. But nowhere near as impressive as AMD’s showing when the Vulkan API is harnessed.

DOOM is one of the more popular games which sports the Vulkan API, and Detroit: Become Human‘s PC version should also tout the API.
