Kingston announced that its IronKey D500S hardware-encrypted USB flash drive has received FIPS 140-3 Level 3 validation from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), making it the first and only USB drive globally to meet this standard while also being fully TAA-compliant. (TAA stands for Trade Agreements Act, in this case it meant that this product can be sold and deployed into US government offices.)

Kingston Announces IronKey D500S As First TAA-Compliant, FIPS 140-3 Level 3 Validated Hardware-Encrypted USB Drive

The company says the IronKey D500S is manufactured in its secured Manufacturing Center in California, US, with critical drive components “directly sourced from TAA-compliant and trusted suppliers.” FIPS stands for Federal Information Processing Standard, and the latest iteration, FIPS 140-3, is set to supersede FIPS 140-2, which will be phased out next year. The drive employs Level 3 of this standard, which is the second-most secure level available.

The IronKey D500S includes XTS-AES 256-bit encryption and multiple layers of protection to meet high-security data-at-rest requirements. Besides that, it features a dual-partition option that allows administrators to provision files to a secured file store; it also supports multiple passwords, global read-only mode, and crypto-erase functionality.

The drive is enclosed in a rugged zinc casing that meets military-grade standards for drop, vibration, and shock resistance, and is rated IP67 for dust and water protection. Available in capacities of up to 512GB, the IronKey D500S offers customizable settings for enterprise deployment and is supported by a five-year warranty and free technical support.

Pokdepinion: Security is serious business, and this drive proves it.
