I believe it is not a coincidence that both smartphone brands named after fruits are turning to India to manufacture their devices. India’s ranks third in the world by purchasing power parity, and is also ranks second in terms of population. With the high buying power and massive human capital available, it really comes as no surprise.

Apple will be setting up their manufacturing plant in Bengaluru, or better known as Bangalore, and is reported to have reached an agreement with the Karnataka government. Wistron Corporation is Apple’s manufacturing partner in India. Apple is expected to begin production in April, targeting the domestic market in India.

Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook has identified India to be an important emerging market, especially with it taking up 66% of the high end smartphone market in October 2016 with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The younger median age of consumers in India as compared to China is also an attractive point for smartphone manufacturers, as younger generations are more willing to spend top dollar for flagship devices.

BlackBerry also considers India a very important market, and has partnered with Optiemus Infracom to design, manufacture and distribute BlackBerry devices in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh. BlackBerry has previously partnered with TCL to manufacture and distribute BlackBerry smartphones worldwide, with the exception of the few countries listed above. This new deal with Optiemus might see India having BlackBerry devices tailored specifically for the Indian market.

India is definitely one of the largest markets for smartphones, and a strong presence the market there is very important. Also worth noting is that with the rise of China’s homegrown smartphone brands, other smartphones are finding it increasingly difficult to penetrate into the Chinese market, which makes penetrating the Indian market all the more vital.

Pokdepinion: One of our writers considers India the second China, and I believe it might be true. With such a huge amount of human resources there, India definitely has the potential to match China in terms of manufacturing capacity. However, this bit of news might not even affect us, as both brands seem to focus on the domestic market with their manufacturing in India.
