Facebook Recently Got Hacked

You’d think the world’s biggest social media platform would be a tough cookie to break. When you think about it however, anything made by a person can also be undone by another person, and this was the case for Facebook which recently got hacked.

According to Business Insider, Facebook disclosed that hackers took advantage of an exploit via a security issue to attack its systems, which resulted in almost 50 million accounts being affected by it.

The security flaw was apparently discovered on Tuesday, and it allowed these hackers to take over user accounts on Facebook as if it’s their own.

Vice President of Product Management for Facebook, Guy Rosen, said:

Our investigation is still in its early stages. But it’s clear that attackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook’s code that impacted ‘View As’, a feature that lets people see what their own profile looks like to someone else. This allowed them to steal Access Tokens which they could then use to take over people’s accounts.

For those of you who aren’t aware, Access Tokens are the essentially digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook without the need to re-enter their password everytime they use the social media platform.

At the moment, they are unaware of who is behind the attack. As a result of this fiasco, their stock has dropped by 3%. Facebook will be holding a press call with the media on this so we’re expecting to hear more about this issue very soon.
