Sony Comments on Next Gen PlayStation Hardware

Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida

We’ve been hearing about the current gen PlayStation 4 being at the end of its life cycle. Of course, this caused quite a bit of confusion because some were taking it as a sign the the platform is dead and the PlayStation 5 will be coming soon. When it comes to official details on the next PlayStation console, information has been scarce.

Now, Sony has officially commented on it.

Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida told the Financial Times that the next gen PlayStation console is seen as necessary for the company. To be precise, this is what he said:

At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware

Yoshida-san did not confirm or deny that said next gen PlayStation hardware would be called the PlayStation 5. While the statement certainly surprises no one given the success of the PS4, this is the first time that a top Sony executive actually confirms the release of a new console as a necessary course of action. That being said, the wording is vague enough to make it difficult to infer the state of development of the platform.

Back in May, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO John Kodera talked about the future of their gaming lineup, leading gamers to believe that the successor would come in 2021. For now, we’re uncertain if the successor will be coming sooner or later.
