Andy Rubin, the CEO of Essential Products, has released a series of teasers for the next Essential Phone. Dubbed Project GEM, the new phone definitely pushes the boundaries on what you would consider a smartphone.

It’s LOOOOOOOOOOONG. Now probably the first thing that comes to your mind is “How am I ever going to fit that in my pocket?”, but actually, the only thing that’s long is the aspect ratio. It isn’t really that long, just that it is very narrow.

A new form factor like this would also mean new app UIs to fit the narrow screen area. Andy Rubin’s tweets did show how apps would look like on the upcoming Essential Phone, although I can’t say I quite see myself enjoying it. Having to reach up and reach down on such a narrow device doesn’t seem like fun, although I do want to be proven wrong and eat my own words.

He also does seem quite excited to show off the new Colorshift material that they are working on. The back sports a single camera, which is quite surprising given that the earlier Essential Phone actually came with two. Also on the back is a dimple which might be a fingerprint scanner, or just something to help you grip the new Essential Phone better.

What do you think of the new phone? Would you give it a shot?

Pokdepinion: I am not sure why would anyone think this is a good idea. But then again, Essential Phone did kick off the trend for notches.
