Sony revisits its classic Walkman MDR-3’s design with its new MDR-3R USB-C wired headphones, paying homage to the original model introduced alongside the Walkman TPS-L2 in 1979. The Sony MDR-3R retains the classic open-ear design and sound character of its predecessor while adding features suited to modern devices, including USB-C connectivity, a built-in microphone, and an in-line remote control.

The MDR-3R closely follows the original MDR-3 in both form and function – it features the same lightweight, open-ear construction for extended comfort, and comes with the iconic blue and orange ear pads that allow users to swap the look based on preference. Sony went for the extra step and even gave the packaging and instruction manual period-accurate design language of the original model as well.
On the audio side, Sony re-engineered the MDR-3R using the same 23mm driver units as the original MDR-3. The tuning closely matches the original sound signature while featuring subtle refinements for contemporary listening preferences. The result is Sony’s signature balanced sound profile with “natural vocals and emotional richness.”

The MDR-3R Stranger Things Edition ties together the portable music culture of the Walkman era with the 1980s setting of the Netflix series. The design draws inspiration from Max’s signature headphone style and the mysterious Upside Down from the show. It features an engraved Stranger Things logo and comes in custom packaging.

The standard Sony MDR-3R is available in Malaysia from 10 November 2026 at an SRP of RM259. The MDR-3R Stranger Things Edition is set to arrive at the end of December 2026, priced at RM299. Both models will be available through official Sony retailers in Malaysia.
