AMD Ryzen AI “Bald Eagle Point” May Be A Stopgap If Zen6 “Medusa” Gets Delayed

AMD’s development plans for its mobile Ryzen processors is all looking pretty good today, with the new Strix Point (Ryzen AI 300 series) leading the charge. Aside from the unannounced Strix Halo, the chipmaker is also developing Zen6-based chips as we speak. However, there is a fail-safe option, codenamed Bald Eagle Point, according to leaker @GodsClumsyHands.

So what’s the deal with this little-known codename? Turns out, AMD is treating Bald Eagle Point as a “break glass” option, in case Zen6 “Medusa” APU is falling behind in development. It’ll use the next-generation Ryzen architecture paired with RDNA5 graphics – mind you, RDNA4 still hasn’t see the light of day yet. Remember, AMD reportedly skipped high-end for RDNA4 so it can focus on the big upgrade that is RDNA5, so the success of this graphics architecture may in some ways determine the development progress of Medusa APUs too.

As the fail-safe option, Bald Eagle Point, presumably to be named Ryzen AI 400 series, will be a small refresh of existing Strix Point (Ryzen AI 300) lineup with the addition of SLC (system level cache, or colloquially referred as L4 cache). This should ease memory-related bottlenecks, of which leaker @Olrak29_ seemingly has pointed out for Strix Point processors. It’s worth noting that Strix Halo, a giant APU featuring huge GPUs similar to Apple’s M-series SoCs, will feature 32MB of MALL cache, so Bald Eagle Point may use similar cache topology as this one.

It’s hard to say if this will be launched, as its existence will depend on the success of Zen6-based APUs. If Medusa gets developed on time, Bald Eagle Point will get permanently shelved as a result – which can be a good thing.
