Acer Hit With Data Breach, 160GB Data Stolen As Hackers Offer Sale
The breach has hit document servers for its technicians – however no customer data was affected, says Acer.
A hacker claims to have stolen confidential data from Acer, including files on the company’s products. The hacker is selling access to the stolen files on a forum, including confidential presentations, product model documentation, and BIOS-related data used on its computers, accounting for 160GB of data. Unsurprisingly – the hacker is only transacting through cryptocurrency as it’s much harder to track, which makes it popular among hacking groups.
Acer meanwhile confirms they have indeed suffered a data breach. “We have recently detected an incident of unauthorized access to one of our document servers for repair technicians. While our investigation is ongoing, there is currently no indication that any consumer data was stored on that server,” Acer told PCMag in a statement.
This is not the first time Acer has suffered with data-related incidents. Two incidents were recorded in 2021 alone, first in February (which the hacker group REvil demanded $50m in ransom), then another in October concerning its after-sales service system in India.
