The App Store ecosystem has reached a record milestone, facilitating over $1.4 trillion in developer billings and sales globally in 2025, according to a new study commissioned by Apple and conducted by economists at Analysis Group. The figure marks a near-tripling of the ecosystem’s size since 2019, underscoring the platform’s sustained growth as one of the world’s largest digital commerce channels. Notably, for more than 90 percent of those billings and sales, developers did not pay any commission to Apple.

App Store Ecosystem Breakdown: Where the $1.4 Trillion Comes From

Of the total $1.437 trillion facilitated by the App Store ecosystem in 2025, the lion’s share came from physical goods and services, which accounted for $1.1 trillion or roughly 79 percent of the total. General retail dominated this segment at $673 billion, followed by travel at $165 billion, food delivery and pickup at $120 billion, and grocery at $98 billion. Ride hailing contributed $64 billion, while digital payment services added $16 billion.

Digital goods and services, which include paid downloads, in-app purchases, and subscriptions processed through Apple’s in-app purchase system, totalled $149 billion, or approximately 10 percent of the overall figure. This segment was driven primarily by games, enterprise apps, and video streaming services. In-app advertising revenue, generated from ads placed by developers within their iOS apps, contributed an additional $151 billion. The App Store reached over 850 million average weekly users across 175 countries and regions throughout the year.

AI Apps Are Transforming the App Store Ecosystem’s Growth Trajectory

One of the most striking findings from the 2025 report is the outsized impact of artificial intelligence on app performance. More than 40 of the top 100 apps on the App Store by billings featured consumer-facing AI capabilities, and those apps recorded billing growth at four times the rate of other top 100 apps. This puts the App Store ecosystem at the centre of the broader AI adoption wave, with apps spanning health and fitness, photo and video editing, and productivity all integrating AI features to deliver more personalised and capable user experiences.

Apple has been actively enabling this shift through its developer tools and frameworks. The Foundation Models framework, which gives developers access to the on-device large language model at the core of Apple Intelligence, allows developers to build intelligent features that work offline and protect user privacy, with no AI inference costs.

Meanwhile, Xcode’s AI coding capabilities, including agentic coding in Xcode 26, are making it faster and more accessible for developers to design, build, and ship apps. This is part of a broader push by Apple to lower the barrier for developers to integrate AI into their products. The Apple Meet with Apple Experts programme has also been providing direct developer support globally as these tools evolve.

Regional Momentum Reflects Diverse Consumer Habits

The growth of the App Store ecosystem was not confined to any single market. Over the past six years, billings and sales facilitated by the App Store more than doubled in China, and more than tripled in both the United States and Europe. Physical goods and services remained the dominant spending category across every region, with general retail ranking first in all markets.

Beyond retail, regional consumer habits drove distinct spending patterns. Travel was the second-largest physical goods and services category in the US, Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil. In Korea, food delivery and pickup took second place. In China, grocery and food delivery ranked second and third respectively. These regional differences illustrate how the App Store serves both global commerce at scale and hyperlocal consumer needs simultaneously, a structural advantage for developers building for international audiences.

Apple’s Ongoing Investment in Developer Infrastructure

Apple continues to expand its developer support infrastructure alongside the growth of the App Store ecosystem. In 2025, Apple Developer Centers hosted thousands of developers across facilities in the US, China, India, and Singapore. A new Apple Developer Center in Berlin is set to open later this year, serving the European developer community. Apple also operates nearly 20 Apple Developer Academies across Brazil, Indonesia, Italy, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and the US, with dozens of additional Apple Foundation Programs equipping the next generation of developers with skills in coding, AI, design, and marketing.

These investments come as Apple prepares to host its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC26) next week, where developers and students will get a first look at new features, APIs, and technologies across Apple platforms. More than 100 new video sessions are expected to be made available through the Apple Developer app, website, and YouTube channel. This follows a year in which Apple Services posted record-breaking growth for 2025, with the App Store’s commerce numbers adding further weight to the platform’s commercial importance.

For context on how the App Store’s monetisation structure has evolved, Apple previously expanded its App Store pricing system to offer developers up to 900 pricing options, giving them more flexibility in how they monetise their apps across different markets. The latest figures suggest those structural changes, combined with AI-driven growth, are translating into tangible results for the developer community worldwide.
