Starting this November, you may soon be seeing Apple’s specialized vehicles roaming around the streets of Malaysia, as the Cupertino giant is collecting imagery and pedestrian data to facilitate its rebuild efforts on Apple Maps. So far, the company has covered Hong Kong, Taiwan, US, UK, Italy, Germany, Singapore, New Zealand, and more locations; citizens will be expected to see the vehicle packed with cameras and LiDAR sensors.

“Apple is conducting ground surveys with vehicles around the world to collect data to improve Apple Maps and to support the Look Around feature. Vehicle surveys may use equipment mounted on the outside of vehicles as well as iPhones, iPads, or other devices inside of vehicles. We may periodically revisit and re-collect data in some of those locations in an effort to maintain a high-quality, up-to-date map,” the company said in a support article.

These data are expected to be integrated into the Look Around feature (Apple Maps equivalent to Google Street View). (Edit: while other countries use this method for capture, it’s unclear if Apple may employ this device in Malaysia.)

The company has also noted that license plates and people’s faces will be blurred before publication to maintain privacy. “We are committed to protecting your privacy while conducting these surveys. For example, we will censor faces and license plates on images that are published in Look Around.”
