Gmail App Will Now Get AI-Powered Search Feature

Google is looking at ways to drop AI wherever possible – and Gmail just got a new feature, while small, could be proven quite useful in actual use cases. The feature in question is simply named “Top results” when you search for particular emails, except it is powered by AI. It will be available to all Google Workspace users as well as anyone with personal Google accounts.

Previously, searching through email is simply done through a chronological order, where the newest emails will be ranked on top. The new AI-assisted search will occupy the top section when you search, and takes into account on things such as most recent emails and “other relevant factors” to provide results.

The company says this is a “highly requested feature”, though take this with some grain of salt given Google has been in a bit of panic mode when Microsoft and OpenAI beat them to the punch some months ago. This feature is only limited to mobile clients only – so if you use PC to check mails, there should be no changes. Mobile users meanwhile should see the updated rolled out by now or in the very near future (rollout may take up to 15 days, starting from June 2).
