WhatsApp Will Soon Enable Sign-In By Email

Per discovery by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is currently testing the ability to sign in using emails instead of phone numbers. This beta release (iOS version 23.23.1.77, Android version 2.23.24.10) will provide users the option to link their phone number with an email address, by simply verifying through clicking a verification link sent to the linked account’s inbox.

This feature is designed to enable logins even when SMS verification is not available for whatever reason (such as no cellular signals), though this is designed to be a supplementary feature instead of replacing phone numbers entirely. Also of note – this is entirely optional, and users can continue to log in using SMS verification without linking to any email accounts (though WhatsApp will recommend you to do so).

Beta testers can find this setting under WhatsApp Settings > Account > Email Address; and as for everyone else, this feature should roll out soon into stable release “over the coming weeks”.

Pokdepinion: Should be pretty useful for situations like unreliable cellular networks.
