WhatsApp Introduces Discord-Like Voice Chats For Large Groups

The latest update from Meta’s messaging app, WhatsApp, comes in the form of voice chat. Functionally, it’s similar to Discord’s voice channels – people can silently join and leave the call, accompanied by a text-based chat alongside for those who can’t talk at the same time.

WhatsApp’s implementation will feature an “in-chat bubble” in the group chat’s interface that users can tap to instantly join. The key difference of this feature compared to a normal group call, is “less disruptive”, according to the developers. During the call, the controls will remain on top of the chat with immediate access to mute or hang-up buttons, and the chat is also available if text input is preferred.

The developers noted that this feature will begin rollout globally to large groups, with those larger than 33 members getting priority access.
